1) Make sure your background color is the background color the image will be used on.

2) Switch to 'Indexed' mode. Use the lowest setting you reasonably can.

3) File >> Export >> Gif89.

4) Select which color(s) will be transparent.

5) Click OK.

well I started off by reading the manual, then I did the Doc's tutorials over at Handson, then I practiced, experimented, then I got off my ass and searched the web for as many tutorials about transparency , how to and what exactly it is, how it works, and guess what? I practiced more until I was satisfied that I knew as much as I could about transparency. weird how that works?

DL that won't work for PS 6, but if you copy the gif89a plug in from 5 to its respective folder in PS6 it will work!

PS6: Save for web lets you choose you matte color right there.

Saves you from needing to work with gif98a.

You simply leave all your transparent pixels out in the open, with no need for a background, then when you go to save for web you can go and choose your matte color. Which will automatically blend all of the transparent pixels to the color of your choice. Makes it nice and simple similar to that of the gif98a exportation.

Insider - what would you like us to do? Magically make you knowledgable and talented?

As VP said - RTFM.

Read the help files provided within Photoshop. Read Doc's transparency tutorial. Read JK's transpareancy tutorial at the Gurus Network.

Work.

Work harder.

Practice.

Practice more.

Then you won't be so damn confused (or so damn confusing).

Hey DL-44, lighten up man, i know from experience that is a lot easier to learn when you have someone that knows what they're doing tell you how to do something when compared to trying to learn from a mind-numbingly boring text file.

I would be honored if someone actually wanted my advice and guidance, not annoyed like you so obviously are.

EG - I'm not annoyed because someone wants my advice. I'm annoyed because the person who is asking for advice here is constantly asking (which is not a problem), and then taking one of two positions:

1) He doesn't like the responses he gets so he begins insulting everyone who replied.

or

2) He keeps saying 'I don't get it, tell me how' when you've outlined the proper resources for him to do a little work for himself and learn the stuff.

That's my point EG - people need to work and learn, and no amount of anyone telling you how to do it is going to help until you put in the effort yourself.

There is nothing here for me to 'lighten up' about. He asked, we answered. The blanks can be filled in by him putting in the effort. Period.

I can understand where DL is coming from. Many of the people around now do not hesitate to ask a question, however, they show little initiative in wanting to actually know, and to let us know that they are not just asking to ask.

In the past if you were to ask a question it would be formed along the lines of. I have been working on 'X' and here is 'X' (they post a picture), but I am stuck on 'problem Y' what sorts of solutions could you offer for the me correcting 'problem y'.

From this type of question we could go along and attempt to give the correct answer.

This is a show an tell forum. You show us, and we will brutally tell. It is not a forum where things are candy coated. We will not sing you praise if praise is not earned. And we will not bash you if bashing is not deserved.

Many are the people here who have amazing skills. DL is one of those people. When you are in the presence of those who do have amazing skills and they will bend down to help you answer questions that fall on the trivial, it is wise to take their advice and work with it. You do not second guess those who give you something freely. You might question internally. But do not second guess.

Many of us here have put in thousands upon thousands of hours tinkering in the arts of photoshop, the methodologies and the trickeries of the program. The learning has come from much trial and error, and without the trial and error you are never going to learn.

"Play, Fiddle, Learn" was the quote. That is how it works. You do not gain as much through the answer as you would through attempting to learn on your own. Easy answers may be desired, however, this is art, and the easy answers will not make you progress.

There is a resource that all should know. http://www.google.com when you have a question your first stop should be there. You should search out the answer and read what is offered, you will learn more there than the quick answer could ever give you. From that you fiddle and play, and come back with your result and ask questions on that. From there you will gain infinately more than in the manner of asking for just the answer.

The resources available on the net are ever flowing and should not be taken for nothing you should read all you can and learn all you can from that information and use this area as a place to meld you skills with those of others, to ask the questions that nothing else could solve for you, for when you do that all of your questions will become far more important and far more meaningful to all.

This does not mean to stop asking questions. Questions are good. But this means you need to work on your question and not just ask it. You question should come with the answers you have found, the reasons they have failed and how you could seek to improve upon your failures. You learn a lot in failure. Never forget that.

Along the same lines, I think you should spend a whole lot more time working and learning and a whole lot less time flappin yer yap.

Glad to see we're all on the same page now.

{{edit - as to your 'not having insulted anyone' .....huh?? re-read some of your recent posts kid.

As to your most recent sig - quote frankly it's the best piece of work I've ever seen you do. If you leave everything as it is, but add definition to the central globe, I'd say you have a keeper.

My previous statement stands.

Transparency was fine and dandy. Wish to god yo hadn't added that awful border, but hey....that's just an opinion.

{{edit

of course...in reference to this whole 'revere the talented people' bit....it's a crock of shit.

Question everything. I'm not all that great when it comes to photoshop. I do watercolors...computer graphics confuse me still. I've never claimed that anyone should listen to me. I claim one thing - I've worked to get where I'm at. Wanna get here? Wanna get better than this? Work for it. End of story.

Back to topic...

I do my transparent gif's differently.. probably not as well or easily, but I've got it practised, and, well, down.

Create your image with your chosen bg color.. *
Duplicate it (ie. make a 2nd identical image..)
Flatten layers..
Copy Background layer, then delete original background layer..
Take magic wand tool.. tolerance set to ZERO!..
Select background with magic wand..
Delete all of background..
File -> Save for web (make sure you select Gif and Transparency..)

Done.

*(I can never remember the "average colour" for this place, I always end up zooming in on my sig with the eyedropper!)
