Hi guys can you recommend to me a PHP/mySql based content management system? I want to publish stuff like music lyrics and daily news articles. So template based sysetm would be cool. Thanks.

Actually I have checked out thhe PHP hotscripts site but all the scripts there are not popular or well supported. I guess we will have to stick with an expensive solution like Cold Fusion which means switching to Windoz!!! crap.

I think you miss the boat with that one. Cold Fusion is awful to work with. There are billions of systems out there. You might try looking at Zope.

Or roll your own. It's a great learning experience.

I like doing that, I currently am working on developing my own JavaBeans to handle a content management system for my sites on campus.

Rolling your own can be fun and exciting, but you have to get it so that your code is reusable, else you are going to be wasting a ton of time on every project.

There are so many different content management systems out there that if you are on a time crunch there is absolutely no need to roll your own. Shit, just go to sourceforge.net and search for "content" and you will find a ton of results on widely used applications, for any and all tasks you need to achomplish in the content developement enviorment.

Well, the syntax of ColdFusion is awful, for a start. Plus, it's not very widely used...

The syntax is the #1 reason why I find cold fusion to suck.

I had a small job from a company in which I needed to move one page in the purchasing process to the end, and then modify position of the content.

All the code I needed was in these 3 pages, for the most part, so I really didn't need to know anything about the code since it is all intuitive. I ended up having to print out the code for these pages and then go over it with a highlighter in order to move the content and figure out how I would change the database accesses.

The code is just not intuitive.

ColdFusion is based on a marketing idea, not on solid technology. Some marketroids some where thought "Hey, HTML is easy-to-use, what if server-side scripting and databases were that easy too?" So they created a language that looks just like HTML and embeds right in it. In theory it makes for less syntax to learn, but in practice it is the ugliest thing in the world.

See, databases, scripting languages and markup languages are different things with different purposes. By making them all look the same, ColdFusion makes it exceedingly difficult to edit/debug/expand it's applications.

As far as making your own CMS, it doesn't sound like you're that into programming, and if you're not then it's going to be a lot of work. If all you're trying to do is publish article-style information then there should be no shortage of free systems that do what you want.

Don't get me wrong I'm not a generic "hate everything Microsoft" kind of geek. I use their workstation OS's and prefer them. but They have yet to prove the reliability and security of the *nix OS's
