It runs through POST fine, and will show the Win2K boot screen, however, about halfway through that (at least halfway according to the status bar at the bottom), right after the keyboard lights flash, all the lights go out, and it acts like it finishes loading Windows, and goes to the blue background, but doesn't show the logon dialog. It acts like the keyboard and mouse are disconnected (can't turn on NumLock, CapsLock, etc). Same problems if I try and boot in safe mode too.

So far I haven't been able to find anyone with any ideas, other than to just reinstall Windows.
I was just going to try put in a HD that I know works, and use the one that's in there now as a secondary so I could at least try and salvage some stuff that was on there before trying to 'repair' Windows from the cd (not my computer, otherwise I'd just wipe it and not worry... Backups are your friend ).

Has anyone here seen something like this before? Or have some idea where to start?

Many thanks, LF

BTW, I mentioned it another thread, but I love the new Asylum ::Big thumbs up to all the MadScis that put so much time and work into it::

well - I'd try to hit f8 at the beginning, right before the win2k boot screen, and load the 'last know good configuration' - it'll hardly harm you, if it doesn't work (you might need to reinstall software you installed since the last good boot, though).

This happened to my comp in about November last year, exact same thing. If I remember, F8 wouldn't let me do anything so I had to backup my HD by using the same method that you thought of LF. Sorry that I'm not more help here.

TP - I'll give that a shot, thanks

Rauthrin - Well, I feel a little better now about it. I was sure that this wasn't the first time this had happened, but damned if I could find anyone who had seen it before. I appreciate the comment, if nothing else, it shortened the time I was going to spend on it tomorrow morning

Thanks to both of y'all
