As far as I was aware, the only place my email address has been used in connection with the Asylum is in my profile (though the input box is empty by default).

Then I noticed this: Email Address (visible to Mad Scientists only ? leave blank to keep your old one) and it set me thinking...

How did they get my email address when I can't even see it myself?

Maybe I'm reading too much into this but I was never spammed via the old Asylum.

sorry - but your email must have been harvested from the old asylum - Since the new one definatly doesn't display it. (not even to MS - we'd need to look into the database when we need it - I had no time for that that feature yet).

Rember, your emailaddress could have been harvested years ago, and could've been used just now.
The url in the mail being from the old asylum as well only makes this explanation more likely.

Ps: I use 'K9' as a spam filter - works reasonably well (2.2% missclassified as 'ham', nothing misclassified as spam within the last 378 days - that means I actually only saw 43 spam mails in my inbox within the last year.)
