I was wondering if anyone could explain the concept of masks to me in a different way. Somewhere along the way I keep getting lost and end up with things that don't seem right.....

With a more specific questioin, we can give more specific help, but in a basic way,, masks are similar to a paper cut out that only allows you to see the underlying image(s) through the hole(s).
Unlike paper, the edges need not be sharp. By that I mean the mask can be faded into or out of, partially blurred, etc.

Does that help, or was that how it was explained before ?

I think that the term "Masks" comes from the photographic background of Photoshop.

To affect a picture that you are developping you can protect part of the picture.

Another analogy would be Stencils... imagine that you've got a black cardstock with a big hole in front of a white wall. If you spray red paint, the paint will go only where you could see the white. But now, you can have an area that is partially covered (imagine a mosquito net) and the wall would then be half white and half red, sort of pink...

The red paint is your layer, and the mask your stencil. Black hides, white reveals...

It is the simplest analogy I can think for masks.

OK, that helps alot. I have a better understanding now. Maybe someone could explain using masks, lighting effects, and the grayscale to make an image 3d?

I guess an example would be helpful...

If someone could explain how to do that in PS7 on a windows platform, I would greatly appreciate it

I got the upgrade through Amazon and it was about $248.00 CD. It was the best deal I was able to find at the time.
