Topic: UBB suggestion: codeblock (Page 1 of 1)

Something like [codeblock] (which preferably should be shorter) should generate

<pre><code>[...]</code></pre>

and [ code] should generate just

<code>[...]</code>

since this will be easier to read when posting short code fragments.

I second that suggestion. I've always wanted a way to distinguish code when just a short snippet appears within a paragraph of text, but [code] creates a whole new block-level element. Would be nice if we could have it both ways. Not absolutely essential, but nice.

well... I don't know.
anyhow, we couldn't change [code], since any number of threads depend on it being a sperate paragraph.

I agree. Semantically speaking, [codeblock] makes more sense, but since [code] is pretty much universal for a block of preformatted code (at least at every forum I've been to), changing its name or behavior would not only detract from usability, it'd probably break a whole lot of threads in the process.

A better solution would be to create a whole new UBB tag to deal with inline code ([icode], perhaps?). That way, anyone who wants to use this new tag can do so, and those who don't want/know/care won't have to worry about a thing.

I also support this move. Maybe instead of altering the current [code] tage we could create a new one called [snippet].
