- Some servers are dedicated, but hidden behind a dynamic ip and

-
a dynamic dns. So a generic domain name, available as a free service, points to

an always changing ip, given by an isp, and makes it hard to track the bad guy.

- MANY spammers use "Open relay" servers: basically, smtp, the protocol for sending mail,

is stupid. It sends mail, period.

If your smtp server is not configured to check which ips are valid for relaying,

anybody can use it to relay his own mail. Therefore, the malicious user

is masked and the server exposed to blacklisting... will be yours, not his.

THIS IS TRUE FOR YOUR ISPS HUUUGE smtp machines, but it is true for your home pc too:

windows 2000, xp, everthing since NT 4 holds a free, enabled smtp server.

To make a long story short, solution: firewall your pc.
