I'd like to install an instant messaging system that will allow me to connect with the various different programs (ICQ and MSN, mainly). I know there are a bunch out there, but I wanted to hear about personal experiences with these programs and find out which one(s) you guys would recommend. |

I`ve been using Trillian for a long time and am happy with it. . The free version still has some issues with MSN, however. (or vise-versa) |

I also use Trillian. I've never tried using it for MSN so I can't speak to that. |

I use Trillian (the free version) here too, for contacts on MSN ICQ AIM IRC and Yahoo. The main problem I have found with Trillian is that I can not do any file transfers with it, as I can with MSN Messenger 6.1. Apart from that it is a good chat prog, not taking up too much room. |

Well the only problem I ever had with the free version of Trillian is that sometimes your MSN account gets disconnected 'silently' ( you're not aware of it until you try to speak with someone ). But frankly, it didn't happen very often, and all you have to do to fix it is to reconnect MSN. It can be annoying but it's not a major problem. Furthermore, I know several people who use MSN and never experienced this bug. |

I've been using Gaim for the last couple of months, and I'm very happy with it so far. I'm using both MSN and ICQ, and both of them work without any problems. |

Miranda. Why? Well, aside what Lacuna already mentioned, it has tabbed window support. ever since Firebird, i love tabbed window programs. |

Hmm... so, Trillian seems to be a favorite. I'll have to try it out, and if I problems with MSN I'll give Miranda a shot. Thanks for the recommendations. |

i have problems messaging with people who use trillian when i'm invisible on Q. in order for it to work, i have to remove them from my visible list. it's quite a pain. i believe at some point, emps was also having the same problems with trillian users. miranda seems to play a lil nicer with the other programs and it's very light on my system |

ah, yes... I installed Trillian last night. Still trying to get used to it. I think I may install Miranda and gaim as well, and test run all three of them... |

I would definitely recommend Miranda. It has never given me any problems, and you can choose what you want and don't want with the program. Plus the community plugins and other customizations are a *huge* bonus. |

Do any of these multiple IM programs work on cell phones by T-mobile? |

Shooting Star: that risk applys to only 2 versions of messenger.. and there is a patch for each as mentioned in the link you posted. No real need for panic me thinks.. as latest version 6.2 does not have this vulnerability. quote:

Just for the record, I've decided not to use a multiple IM prog--the one friend I wanted to talk to has switched over to ICQ, so there is no longer any need for me to use anything else. quote:
