I'd like to install an instant messaging system that will allow me to connect with the various different programs (ICQ and MSN, mainly). I know there are a bunch out there, but I wanted to hear about personal experiences with these programs and find out which one(s) you guys would recommend.

I`ve been using Trillian for a long time and am happy with it. . The free version still has some issues with MSN, however. (or vise-versa)

That would definitely be a drawback for me. The only reason I need this is to connect a guy who can only use MSN at work...

I also use Trillian. I've never tried using it for MSN so I can't speak to that.

I use Trillian (the free version) here too, for contacts on MSN ICQ AIM IRC and Yahoo. The main problem I have found with Trillian is that I can not do any file transfers with it, as I can with MSN Messenger 6.1. Apart from that it is a good chat prog, not taking up too much room.

miranda seems to be pretty alright. i definitely like it better than trillian.
the drawback to any of the "all in one" programs is that they don't work perfect for every single thing. an update to msn or q and it gets a lil buggy til the program your using gets updated as well.
miranda's very light, has nifty lil plugins (michael wiped me out playing battleship....the bastard).
miranda is also portable...which is a big plus for me.

Well the only problem I ever had with the free version of Trillian is that sometimes your MSN account gets disconnected 'silently' ( you're not aware of it until you try to speak with someone ). But frankly, it didn't happen very often, and all you have to do to fix it is to reconnect MSN. It can be annoying but it's not a major problem. Furthermore, I know several people who use MSN and never experienced this bug.

I personally never experienced any problem when sending files with it.

Trillian is an excellent chat program. To sum it up quickly, it does everything you could ask a chat program.

I've been using Gaim for the last couple of months, and I'm very happy with it so far. I'm using both MSN and ICQ, and both of them work without any problems.

Miranda. Why? Well, aside what Lacuna already mentioned, it has tabbed window support. ever since Firebird, i love tabbed window programs.

Hmm... so, Trillian seems to be a favorite. I'll have to try it out, and if I problems with MSN I'll give Miranda a shot. Thanks for the recommendations.

i have problems messaging with people who use trillian when i'm invisible on Q. in order for it to work, i have to remove them from my visible list. it's quite a pain. i believe at some point, emps was also having the same problems with trillian users. miranda seems to play a lil nicer with the other programs and it's very light on my system

I would reccomend gaim as well. I have been using game for a good long while now and it does exactly what I want it to, and I find it much easier and nicer to look at than trillian. But either would fit the bill.

ah, yes... I installed Trillian last night. Still trying to get used to it. I think I may install Miranda and gaim as well, and test run all three of them...

I would definitely recommend Miranda. It has never given me any problems, and you can choose what you want and don't want with the program. Plus the community plugins and other customizations are a *huge* bonus.

Trillian - What I use most of the time. Works for me.
Gaim - I like it. GTK is ugly, though.
Miranda - Tried it out. Really fast, though the interface could use some polishing.

The nice thing about IM clients like ICQ and MSN is that they obviate the need for security such as Firewalls. In fact they are the digital equivalent of leaving the door and windows (no pun intended) wide open to hackers.
They are exploited by hackers on a regular basis so why bother protecting your PC if you are going to run a security risk like an IM program?

Shooting Star: that risk applys to only 2 versions of messenger.. and there is a patch for each as mentioned in the link you posted. No real need for panic me thinks.. as latest version 6.2 does not have this vulnerability.

quote:
Affected Software:
?
Microsoft MSN Messenger 6.0 - Download the update
?
Microsoft MSN Messenger 6.1 - Download the update

Mitigating factors:
?
An attacker must know the sign-on name of the user
?

... and... If the user has blocked receiving messages from anonymous users not on their contact list by placing "All Others" in their block list, the attacker's messenger account must be on the user's allow list to exploit the vulnerability.

The software listed above has been tested to determine if the versions are affected. Other versions either no longer include security patch support or may not be affected.

Just for the record, I've decided not to use a multiple IM prog--the one friend I wanted to talk to has switched over to ICQ, so there is no longer any need for me to use anything else.

Um, yeah... not sure how to respond to that. Pretty much what Xpirex said, I suppose. Sounds like a bit of fear-mongering, if you ask me. So, thanks, but next time I'll ask if I want security advice.
