Hi guys, I'm trying to simulate the front cover of a leather bound book in Photoshop, it needs inlayed metalic gold text also. I'll be d@mned if I can figure out how to do it myself, any tips???

I can give you a tip on the gold effect.

- Position the text where you want it and with the font and everything you want on the image of the book.
- Select the text, make a new channel, and paste the text back in in the same place.
- Now make a duplicate of that channel, and gaussian blur it for 2 or 4.
- Select the text from the first channel with a control click so you remain in the second channel, but with a selection of the outline of the first.
- Invert the selection, and trim away the edge of the blurred text by filling the selection with black.
- Deselect everything, return to the primary channels and make the text there gray.
- Rasterize the text so it can be manipulated with filters, or duplicate the layer and rasterize that.
- Select filters > render > lighting effects
- In the lighting effects window, set the gloss to shiny, the material to metallic, and the texture channel to the second channel you created.
- Adjust the spotlight to have it point in the direction you want the light to be coming from.
- Render the effect.
- Now go to image > adjust > curves.
- Click and drag on two points on the line to create a sort of rollercoaster look like this -> /\/ up, then down, then back up. This gives your text a shinier look than it had before.
- Now you can go to image > adjust > hue and make the shiny gray text a goldish hue.

I used to actually have a short tutorial I made about this, but that site is gone. I'll redo the steps when I'm at home, not at work, so you can see what I'm describing.

That would be really helpful, thanks. I'd appreciate any RGB figures you could give me too as I'm colourblind and trying to do this for a friend who ain't so hot on a computer.

Thanks a lot!

Hey, Shield. Good to hear from ya.

Antnee : For the leather, start with a blank document and,
type D to reset colors.
Go Filter>>Render>>Clouds.
Go Filter>>Stylize>>Emboss. Set texture to suit.
Duplicate that layer and go Filter>>Atristic>>Plastic Wrap. If either of the last two filters is too strong, go Edit>>Fade and reduce the opacity, or change the blending mode. This must be done immediately after using the filter.
Add a Hue/Saturation layer, tic the Colorize button and adjust to the desired color.
Press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+N (new layer) and CRTL+ALT+SHIFT+E (merge visible).
Mask off the book shape, add a few details, and it looks something like this:

Also when working with a 'gold' (ish) colour.. try inverting (Ctrl I) it .... you will get same value 'blue'...which is at the opposite side of the colour wheel and I find that it is sometimes easier to get darker or lighter values of gold by tweaking it a bit in 'blue'... then just Cntrl I (invert) and see what comes up. A few speckles of variants of red... also add to it.

Hey guys. Thanks for the help so far but I'm not sure that the book above is really what I'm after. I need a more realistic leather. Think I probably need a good scan of some leather and then worry about the type afterwards. Anyone with a good scan of some leather who feels like posting a link or something would be a life-saver!

Thanks again guys

Here you go, man.

http://www.68k.org/~fenris/tut/gold/

I whipped up a quick tutorial on making shiny-looking gold.

Here's the end result of the tutorial, just in case you want to see what it looks like before bothering to click.

If I screwed up and left something out, let me know.

That is AWESOME, pretty much exactly what I am looking for!

I'll let you in to why I need it. My friend is a DJ and has put together a compilation called Connection: Definition. (Connection is the main name, Definition is the CD title as he got fed up with just using numbers, so far there has been Broken Beats, Media, Destination EMA, Descending and many more)

The inside covers will be written like the pages of a dictionary and I wanted the outside to look leather-bound with inlaid gold lettering, though I'd have to say that your example is more embossed as opposed to inlaid but I guess I could play with the shadows and lighting angles to get the effect I need.

Thank you so much for your help!

Inlaying is easy... it's just embossed text embedded into the background with a sort of inverted emboss effect. I actually figured yours would be inlaid, but couldn't get the shading to look right on my carpetting background, so I decided I'd leave it and let you get the "set in" look on your own.

Human shield, where did you get that font you used for the tut? I do some graphic design for my school's webteam but I can never seem to get cool fonts.

i think the second one is better,, but try adding some highlights to the lether and darken it.. and use a outer glow on the writings and the logo color it black and mode on overlay or multiply - and increase the text saturation color---
try it i think it'll work...

OK, how about this one then... I've changed the font because I've been told it doesn't fit and the guy I've done it for isn't keen...

Any better?

Here's a close up of the crest...

I think it came out quite well, looks kinda like gold poured into it I think. Looks quite natural, rather than too 'computer clean'. It won't be this visible though when finished as the above pics will be around 120mm each way to fit a standard CD case so this will be much smaller, I just made it in a pretty hi-res picture to start with.

Now all I have to do is get a realistic looking paper inside for the rest of the design, need to make the listings on the inside cover look like they're written for a dictionary

That is the Dark Crystal font. I don't remember where I got it, but I've found it available here
