terragen is nice. i have been using it for a while, but i just cant get away from pov ray. (altough you cant compare these 2 softwares)

Terragen is pretty good, only used it a bit. But currently we're using Afterwork's Dreamscape in our film prodcution and I swear by it! Does some great stuff, including landscapes, clouds, skies, water, waves, dynamics, snow, etc. But the pitfall is it costs...a bit. Mind you, you can get a demo from the Sitni Sati website, along with other great products they have.

If anyone is interested in creating photorealistic worlds you could check out the following site as an example. Obviously the degree of photorealism supported will depend on your hardware. This example should run on most rigs:

to view it you will need a "free" (a nag screen appears every so often but no expiry) viewer to be downloaded at:

http://www.flatland.com/ in the dowloads section and u must get there using IE.

then, you will have to replace a dll with a beta dll which allows textures larger than 256
the beta dll (100% free and i think it will remove the nag - this not a crack, this is legal) can be
found at:

http://www.plains.net/~stephens/NPRover.zip

once extracted, the dll replaces a file called

C:\Program Files\Flatland\FlatlandRover.dll

if you accepted the default folder.

Here's a screenshot. The author lives in France and as far as I know this la rue royale in calais france based on digital pics. Keep in mind that this is a world - so you walk through it and enter buildings etc. it also supports sound and scripting (there is a day/night script here) as well.

Terragen is about the most fun I've had with a program since Photoshop. Been doing a bit of it (again) as of late. Just takes a bunch of tinkering, really.
