Topic: Beginner, Noob question (Page 1 of 1)

This question is about liquid designs. I am using Dreamweaver 2 and am creating my first web site. I found that on screens with lower resolutions half my page flows off the right hand side. In my search on this forum i've deduced that I need to change the width settings to 100%. That has worked fine for my main banner and it now looks great at every resolution, but the problem I have is with the rest of my layers, if I have layers beside eachother and try to add them to 100% it just does not work.

The next thing I tried to do is to just add one big layer to cover my whole web page and make that width 100%. But that did nothing as well. I'm still learning and I'm thinking that maybe my other layers are not nested in the big layer I created.

Does anyone have a quick simple fix? I know it has to be something easy i'm overlooking but would appreciate any help I can get.

ps, I know this question must sound lame, I apologize in advance. I'm new at this and if I'm in the wrong community for these questions let me know and i'll move on, no flames please.

Well, they need to add up to 100%. Big difference there. There are a great many variable involved though, and the solution will depend a great deal on how exactly your code is setup and specifically what you want to acheive.


I know nothing of dreamweaver, and am hesitent to go into too much detail on a coding solution since it would seem that might not help you too much.

It is far easier too help solve a problem though, if we have the actual page to look at. Not knowing how it is setup, or exactly how things go wrong makes it very difficult to do anything other than guess vaguely.

And don't worry about sounding lame - we all start somewhere.

The header and banner I have at 100%, my problem is with the stuff below it. If I try to add it to 100% width wise I get all kinds of crazy stuff. So right now I have the stuff below fixed at 1024 pixels.

Any suggestions would be great

Wow, I thought this was an easy fix. I guess I could try switching to tables but I hate to do something that is considered unprofessional. I did figure out how to "Nest" my layers into the big layer I set up. But even when I set the big layer up to 100% it doesn't expand the nested layers.

So I am at a loss. Does everyone just use tables? any ideas?

Dear god no.

I am honestly somehwat at a loss as to where to start with this though. Dreamweaver makes some *really* ugly code, and getting it into shape is no small feat. The best idea IMO is to simply scrap what dreamweaver has done and start from scratch, as the layout you are going for is not a complciated one.

If you're willing to dump DW and get your hands dirty, here are a couple resources that will be very helpful:

Thanks for the links, I have some work to do I guess. I have no programming experience but HTML doesn't look all that complicated so I'll give it a shot.
