I didn't know the donut industry had a problem with that. Is there a story behind this?

I don't think I've ever walked into a donut shop, asked for a bear claw and gotten a bear claw. I always get a fritter.
Maybe this isn't such a problem in certain other parts of America, but down here, people don't know what a bear claw is. (Come to think of it, the same thing always happened to me in California.)
Now I bet I could get one if I went to a nice pastry shop, but any place with "DONUTS" on the building in letters over 18" in height will serve me a fritter. Case in point, every freakin' place I stopped for breakfast on my recent four-day-road-trip photo shoot.
I guess they think because it's round and brown, it looks like a bear's foot. Hello? Where are the toes??
Thank God the Tom Thumb across the street sells them.

Maybe you should ask for a fritter instead, you might get a bear claw.

Come to Boston.
We have no idea what a Bear Claw OR a Fritter is.
At least instead of getting the wrong thing you'll get a blank stare.
Or the finger (the NorthEast's version of the Bear Claw I guess).

Here a fitter is a ring of pinapple or a whole banana dipped in batter, deep fried and dusted with icing sugar, and I have never heard of these 'bear claws' before, either, what do they consist of?

I've never seen a bear claw before. I heard it referenced in Reservoir Dogs, but I thought it was slang for beer or something.
Looks like a mutant cookie with peanuts to me.

"a mutant cookie with peanuts to me"
Shaved almonds if I'm not mistaken.
Looks tasty but pricey.
Hope you wash your hands before you dig in - looks like a finger-licker!

A bear claw is a pastry with icing, a cinnamon filling and shaved almonds. Very tasty.

It sounds it. Why have I never heard of these and why don't they exist around here?

Find yourself a pastry shop or a nice coffee house and see if they have some. They might be a regional thing, but I doubt it; it's not exactly the type of item that would be exclusive to the south.

Well, if it has cinnamon in it, it must be pretty damn good.

I've never heard of either - not really a popular snack over in the UK, I guess.
Completely unconnected, but I'm always annoyed when I ask for a Coke in a bar and get a Pepsi. This is actually covered by trading laws, so they are obliged to inform you if they are going to substitute one for the other.
They never do.
