yo im not sure this should be in this forum but whatever, can anybody tell me how to make .htaccess files on xp, on my old system i just made them in notepad but on xp it just gives me .htaccess.txt or if i do it on anothe program it just adds the file exstension on the end

you'll need to select 'save as: all files' in notepad - that should stop the .txt from appearing.

I don't use XP, but in all the other versions of Windows you can remove an extension from a file name by renaming it in My Computer.

<edit>Oh yeah. You may have to change the folder options to allow you to see the extensions</edit>

unfortunatly, Explorer doesn't believe '.htaccess' to be a valid filename and won't let you rename a file to it.
