If u guys could give me any help with this, it would be much appreciated.
Im in France, and its been really hot, so there have been lots of midges around. One has crawled _behind_ the screeen of my laptop in such as was that is is visible, but is behind the front layer of the screen so I cant get to it. It wandered away after a while, a I kept my laptop carefully covered to prevent a similar thing happening again, but it appears to have wandered back. And died. In the middle of my screen.
Has anyone had a similar experience. Does anyone know how I can get rid of it? Any help would be much appreciated, though I would prefer non-invasive procedures

Thanks very much!!

Tap-a tap-a? Give 'er a shake? If trying to gently persuade it out doesn't work, you may have to go in after it, or wait until it decomposes and disappears

No! Midge, not midget, like little bug things. Given it a good tap, but to no avail . Will have another fiddle, otherwise I'll just leave it to disintegrate - its only little.

Being keen on disassembling things as I am, I'd already have the whole thing dismantled and cleaned up.

I wouldn't recommend it if you don't know a Posidrive from a Phillips though.

Ummm...I'm just wondering, why anyone would sit in the middle of a cloud of Midges with a Laptop...could just be me, though.

I dont like midges. Quite the reverse, I hate them. And there was no cloud. But it was that or no computer - theres no place I can use it without them
Im competent with screwing with hardware (repairing a cousin's PS2 without ever having opened one before and without a guide comes to mind), but Id really rather not screw with a 1400 quid lappy....

Believe it or not... I googled to find a 'solution' for this lol...

It happened to me this morning

I'm in the middle of taking off the fittings of my Dell Inspiron 5150 as we speak... might even phone them see what they suggest

Lucky mine died at the top of the screen (just below any maximised window bar) and not in a really bad place like, dead centre

Hmmm :'(

France will resist the invader by all means !

Jokes apart, you're both seriously unfortunate... I've never heard of such examples before, that's quite stunning. I don't know if removing it by yourself is the best solution - laptop screens are so fragile -, perhaps you should try bringing it to a computer store...

Well, in case I'm not the only one who doesn't have the foggiest idea what a 'midge' is (I thought he said 'midget' the first time I read it too... Glad Wes cleared that one up, otherwise that's a pretty big laptop, or maybe a mini-midget), here are a couple pages I googled:

http://www.bmi.net/roseguy/gbmidge.html
http://www.mosquitoes.org/Midge.html

And while we're on the topic... http://www.fetchfido.co.uk/games/midget_tossing/midget_tossing.htm

Actually, thanks to a dodgy backlight, Im sending mine in to be repaired, and will ask them to remove the bug at the same time .
REally unlucky? Happened to my brother as well! Bloody midges!

Another question, totally unrelated:

My laptop is partitioned into C and D - it came like that. Is it safe to format D: to ext3 or something, and stick Linux on it? Or will poor little windows get confused that suddenly D: ain't NTFS any more?

Anyway, thanks for ur help guys!

Panasonic do a 'ruggedised' laptop that is impervious to shock, moisture, heat, dust, and electromagnetic pulses that would normally damage such equipment....

...but I bet it isn't midge-proof!

As regards dual-booting Linux and Windows, here are some sites you might find useful:

http://www.littlewhitedog.com/content-52.html
http://www.geocities.com/epark/linux/grub-w2k-HOWTO.html
http://www.enterprisedt.com/publications/dual_boot.html
http://www.g4techtv.com/feature.aspx?article_key=33367

And you should be able to do pretty much anything with the second partition (so long as you observe boot partition constraints) without upsetting Windows at all.
