Hello everyone,

since most SmartTab users also happen to be members of the Asylum,
I'd like to announce a new version (4), with two new minor changes:

-mousewheel support to select windows.
-'restart - kill old'. When you start SmartTab again while another copy of it is running, the first copy closes itself. This way you can try out colorschemes much more rapidly, since you'll always have the SmartTab you started last - and it also prevents multiple SmartTabs from hanging around in your memory.

You can find the new version under http://www.SmartTab.org/download.php

If you don't have version 3 (right click SmartTab.exe, and you don't see a 'Version' tab), make sure to get the new version - it feels much faster.

I'd appreciate it if you'd spread the word if you like SmartTab.

so long,

->Tyberius Prime

I can't get it to work

I'm using windows 98, without any Powertoy installed (for obvious reasons).

And yes, I keep hiotting alt+tab. Not that i use that keyboard shorcut much, as my middle button lets me do a similar thing.

sorry alevice - it's 2000 and up only. I thought the website stated that somewhere... must check.

Metahuman: Your loss - this version really pops up *much* faster - and the domain name is pretty small and unobstrusive.

Nice, nice!

Need to append .php to the download URL up there, though - leads to a 404 page at the moment.

LMAO @ Tao and thanks man!

XP Powertoys' Alt+Tab replacement was crap. It sucked, plainly.

In contrast, your little gadget is a prime example of good programming practice. It's wickedly neat too!

I don't even mind the little addy tagged there, though I'm sure it will grow to irritate the hell out of me in time...

kudos to Tyberius Prime! the mouseWheel addition is really pleasant to use when there's more than 5 process.

[edit] Don't know if I had to restart between killing the SmartTab v3 and launching the v4, but now I can no longer press TAB or SHIFT+TAB to cycle through the processes. Only the mouseWheel works. [/edit]

[edit2] I've rebooted my computer, and finally it seems that the TAB and SHIFT+TAB shortcuts works only once. [/edit2]

TP - noticed the 'feature' in this program that poi did, and this is the behaviour that seems to occur:

1) start running exe - alt + tab + tab + tab works to select program
2) still working.... then use mousewheel to select program
3) now, alt + tab + tab + tab does not work, need to restart program for it to work...

I'm sure it's been discussed and I missed it but why you wanna use a mouse with an alttab utility, seems against the spirit of the intended function anyhow.

I dig this utility quite a lot, thanks TP

With one hand already on the mouse, and the action of scrolling through things with the mouse wheel firmly ingrained in your mind, it is quite natural to use the mouse wheel for this.

Since the mouewheel doesn't work in the normal alt-tab dialogue, it would be no loss for it not to work here, but it is a nice feature. Of course, this bug is a detraction to that at the moment, but hey - love it all the same.

Excellent - I didn't notice the problem till it was pointed out, as I started using the mousewheel constantly. Good that it is fixed already, though.

I was very skeptical about using this. I never even used ALT - TAB much before. When I read all the praise about this software I gave it a shot. I'm pleasently suprised and my make ALT - TAB my new navigational feature.

One feature I might add if I had any programming skills at all. Would be mouse hovering over desktop and press the middle scroll and have the SmartTab appear. This way I would never have to touch the keyboard ever again. (except for PS shortcuts)

Still it's a great piece of software

Unfortunatly, that just won't happen... it doesn't integrate at all with the usual alt-tab behaviour which is 'dissapear when the user releases alt' - kinda hard to do when you never hit alt in the first place.
(plus global hooking the middle mouse button isn't easy when you're not a mouse driver).

what I might add is a 'activate window by hovering while draging something'... happend to me three times today that I had a file, hit alt tab, and waited for a window below my mouse to pop up... do you think that's a good idea?

TP,
on your main page......

quote:
Activate a window either by using the regular alt-tab dance, or hit a key between 0 and 9 and a-z (choosing the window you want), or by clicking it's title (usefull when you've your right hand at the mouse already).

Left out the word got

Actually, it didn't need the word got, as without the contraction, it would read "useful when you have your right hand at the mouse already". I am more likely to speak like this (including the contraction).

:P

Mouse hover activation (X-Mouse style) is a feature included in TweakUI (2K & XP) but you cannot specify the conditions under which it is active (such as when dragging an object). If you could improve upon this so that you have various options for modes of operation, I think you'd be well on your way to creating a popular new set of Powertoys (and so far, showing more innovation and design-effectiveness than Microthief's poor efforts.

YES, it's a great idea, you crazy fool!
