Hey all:

Ok, I?m looking for some advice on efficient project workflow between client and myself and a third team member.

Basically as a freelance web designer (balanced w/ FT job) I am taking on more and more clients, and I want (at this point) to continue to be the lead designer . . . but I do not want to have to waste time maintaining the sites- the task of wasteful textual updates for one client takes valuable design time from another client. So I don?t want to completely steer away from biz that requires continuous updating. Instead, I am considering hiring a college kid familiar with basic xhtml/css/ftp to do updates for me. I?m in NYC, where there are so many schools to choose from all I have to do is post a job on a school website . .

[edit]as I look at this I realize its pretty damn straightforward, just when high volume of work gets processed its nice to have a model[/edit]

I am getting into a similar boat... i want to remain small enough to not have to employ full timers, but instead i will be contracting work out to people. And these people dont have to be experts i am happy to teach them what i know.

For me since i also manage sites... im considering putting into place with all of my websites, a system where i can update the site via content management easily. The client would have no access to this unless they have paid for CMS.. But.. see how it goes.. not enough time in the world

Your workflow looks fine in theory, hopefully it all goes straight forward. Of course just allow for those clients where it doesnt go straight forward - it will always happen at least once.. somehow.

We have been doing this succesfully with both the new version of Contribute (3) and an open-source project management system: NetOffice - http://netoffice.sourceforge.net/index.php . It is loosely based on Macromedia's SiteSpring. It is nice in that it allows us to have things available for client viewing/feedback and keep it separate from operations among multiple team members. Automatic e-mail notifications keep everyone up to date and standardizes a lot of the cumbersome processes of project management with remote contractors...
