I'm looking for a desktop deal on a good multimedia PC, don't care what OS, but I want it to cost under $1000 USD and I want it to be able to handle programs like Flash, Maya 5, and Photoshop. I'm looking for something with enough space that later I can add a 7-in-1 media reader and some faster DVD and CD drives than what I have. I'm a high school student, I want to start doing CG as a hobby to see if I'd like to try it as a career, so I have no idea what I REALLY need, just what I want. So any advice at all will be better than none, IMO. You can leave a post here or e-mail me @ BOBA22288@aol.com

Thanks

Well, to run the Personal Learning Edition of Maya the following is needed:

  • Intel® Pentium® II or higher,
  • AMD Athlon? processor, Macintosh® G4
  • 512 MB RAM
  • CD-ROM Drive
  • Hardware-Accelerated OpenGL® graphics card
  • 3-button mouse with mouse driver software
  • 450 MB of hard disk space

For $1059 (+tax), you can buy a Dell Dimension 8400 w/ 3GHz Pentium 4, 512MB DDR2 SDRAM, 160GB HD, 17in monitor, etc. Of course I would suggest spending a bit more money and building your own system from scratch. It could be a fun experience and you'd get more power for your money.

thanks. Anyone else have a suggestion?

Maybe I should just ask- what's your PC setup, as far as graphic card, RAM, and processor?

Before you dish out $1000+ on a new system, why not work with what you have first and make progressive steps? Build up your experience before you build up your assets.

you may want to look into an eMac. It's got a nice price, plenty of power for the apps you mentioned, and OS-X.....

@ synax: Well, right now I have a Dell 4600, with Photoshop Elements and Windows XP Home. If I want to use REAL Photoshop, that means dishing out money for a license, or stealing one from the local university. If I want to run Maya 5, I need XP Pro. Half my problem right now is software, and the computer this is on is my family's home computer and I want something I can take to college with me. So I'm getting ready to buy/build a PC anyway, I just wanted some advice. I've made do with MSPaint longer than necessary, believe me.

Also, what makes more sense: A Wacom tablet, or a Tablet/notebook PC? I'm thinking Tablet, just because it's cheaper and doesnt' come with an attached laptop with a relatively slow processor. (I'm thinking Acer's and Compaq's models.)
