Hello!
Time for my first post!
I searched the web for a picture from a RPG (The Black Eye, a german rpg).
But I only found scanned versions, which are really bad. Here is one:
http://www.luzifer.at/hadmar/auge.JPG
First I thought to paint over the original to optimize it, but now after several
tries I give up.
Can someone please help me to create a new "black eye" from the start?
My experience of Photoshop is very newbish! But I hope some tips of you could help me!

thanks,

Sascha

Look in mirror, ball fist, punch really hard in the eye, wait two hours, now look in mirror again, paint what you see...

Sorry, could not resist and I can't really offer any real help.
Personally I'd start with working with the pen tool in different layers to get the shapes down, then start to play with shading of different kinds. But that's me and I'm not very good

By black eye do you mean broken? bruised? forgotten? sore? </nin>

Or do you mean an eye in which the color is black, or maybe a black and white rendition of an eye?

I'm gonna guess it's "black" eyes. Not "black eyes".

Mein Augen tut mir weh!

Never take you guys' advice again...

I'd suggest just experimenting with stuff. I usually get a better effect than expected when I just use brushes to make stuff like the eye in my signature, instead of relying on filters, and Blending Options and all that junk.

Thanks for all your posts.
But my initial intention was to create a black eye similar to the link I posted.
I mean not an "authentic" eye. Just a painted eye with 3d effect. Currently I'm reading through the post "Need Help: With plastic ball".
My problem is to create the shadow effects. I know it could be done with masking layers?

Well without spending a great deal of time on it, to enhance specific details... this was created using radial gradients for the main eye shapes (upper lid and eyeball), and the bottom of the eye was created with Paths then filled, and the shadows/highlights/reflections were all hand painted.

The aged look is Noise plus Unsharp Mask plus Median. That's a personal pref though. If you know other ways have at 'er.

TIP: to create the thin eyelid itself (just above the eyeball), you can fill an oval with a solid colour, then select it, and nudge the selection down 10px or so, then delete the selected section.

Hope that helps get you started.

Sorry theGuest.
I was on holiday. Excuse me.
Your first post was exactly the thing I wanted to here. How I can reproduce the blackeye.
I experiment how to create the eyeball. My Problem is to find the correct adjustments for the radial gradients. Should I take black/white, or grey/white?

So far, thank you for your post! It wasn't wasted time!

Holy Horse Shit batman... If that didn't take you much time then you're a genious. It looks better than the original.

Aaah ok... sorry for the sarcasm. Was really just *bumping* the thread so it didn't get lost in case you'd missed/forgotten it.

I used white-to-black radial and then Levels to adjust both white & black to a proper shade.
One characteristic i noticed about the original is that it's not a sphere... it's an oval that 'droops' a little. As if it's soft.
To address that issue i used an oval brush and added an extra highlight on a new layer. Reduced its Opacity until it blended with the original gradient. You could also use the Liquify filter too to 'squish' the sphere into shape. Or use the Transform tools too. The choice is yours.

Take notice also that there are 2 reflective highlights along the base of the eyeball on each side. That's an optional effect but it does help to make the eyeball appear more oval.

If you'd like any other help/advice on this feel free to ask.

Thanks for the kind words.
Actually... it really didn't take that long TBO. In fact i took more time studying the 3D properties of it than actually recreating them. Studying really can help speed things up. That and.. the original is quite Jpg compressed... the visual quality is severally lacking.

@theGuest:
Thanks for your help. It goes straight forward. The eyeball looks good.
I think the reflections and proper shadows on the eyeball won't be my problem.
Currently I'm fighting with paths. Especially with the path on the
uper eye. I try to get a selection for it to create another radial gradient.
Maybe I'll try to create a "circle selection" an subtract some parts.
Don't know about other methods, any suggestions?

By the way, normally I'm a programmer. But Photoshop is going to make fun, so sorry for my stupid questions!

Now you're thinkin'.

I only used paths for the bottom edges of the eye. The other oval shapes are selections, gradient filled and hacked or covered (or masked).

Have another go at it, see what you come up with.
