Looks like someone created an old-skool graphic demo completely in DHTML --- forgive me if this has already been posted here, but it's too cool to miss:

OOOOooooooooooooooooooooo....
That's just.... well, unfriggin believable!

I've been sitting lifting my chin from the desk from time to time with the contests going on here but the visuals, and the speed on this one... gah!

However, when dl'ing the .zip i noticed that it was 3.64 Mb where the most is images. the js is some 2000 lines inc whitespace so he's got a while to go to get it down to 20 lines that some (you know who you are) manage superb stuff in...

But wow, I understand why this guy won!

Well, that demo is not top notch but has the merit to exist and have certainly required a lot of efforts to put all the effects together. I don't know when/where is the next party with a browser demo compo, but I really feel like giving it a try. I already have a load of effects that just need being packed together and nested in a clean design., and some time to code and design some more. As the author said, the size limit was 5Mb and the prod was run on the local network, so he didn't bothered optimizing to the core and checking preloading problems.

InI: hehe, do you feel bitter that a JavaScript prod managed to blow some Java ones away

[quickpost] InI: I was teasing you Bunny I'm not praysing this demo, but technically wise it still blows Haujobb's DHTML demo away ( not that hard ). Thank you for your remark about copter cruise ( aka voxel landscape in 14 lines of JavaScript ). [/quickpost]

w00t, pretty nifty.

The Mandlebrot astounded me... I was wondering how in the heck he was able to render it so fast... until I realized he cheated.

Hi, I'm the guy(s?) who wrote this thing...

To correct a couple of things: there's no such thing as the Assembly DHTML compo; this was (afaik) the first ever DHTML demo shown at Assembly, and the second ever DHTML demoscene production at all. (I was a bit put out when I learned that Haujobb had beaten me to the idea, but less concerned when I actually saw it...) The other entries in the browser demo compo were all Flash / Shockwave, so it didn't blow away any Java entries - in fact Java is specifically excluded, and goes in the main demo compo instead (as unfair as that may be). I didn't spend a whole year on it - I was playing around with JS effects for the best part of a year, but the earliest bits that made it into the final demo were from April, and well over 50% of the work was done in the week leading up to Assembly.

Sure, maybe it isn't state-of-the-art in comparison to the 5K and 20-line masterpieces, but it was never supposed to be a pure technical demonstration, and I make no apologies for the fact that it's gratuitously graphic-heavy and in-your-face. If it turns out that the most innovative thing about it is the fact that it was entered into a demo party, then so be it... I'll be more than happy if it inspires anyone to do a better one for next year. (As far as I know Assembly is the only party with a compo like this - they generally do a good job of coming up with neat platform-agnostic compos, such as the 'oldskool' competitions that cater for ZX Spectrum buffs like me. Outside Assembly, you'll probably have to enter a wild demo compo and get your hard work trounced by lame home videos...)

Glad I found this place. The 20-line contests look great fun - I'm sure I'll be trying my hand at one before too long...

Yeah. I sort of share INI's view on the demo, but congrats nevertheless!

But good choice on entering the 20 liners - they're great fun. As you probaby know, thiis month its "save the princesss" - go for it, there's plenty of time yet!

shingebis: Welcome and congrats for your 1st place.
I can't wait to see how you handle tighter rules. Damn, I wish won't have to go to Finland just for a browser compo if I make the trip I'll have to code a "real" prod too ( like a 4Kb or a 64Kb ).

You mentionned the5k several times, have you entered one them ?

Nope, never entered the5k myself - I only found out about it (and indeed, only got into Javascript at all) after the 2002 competition was over, and the Siggraph takeover seems to have been a bit too botched and last-minute for me to do anything for it. (The page with two conflicting deadlines doesn't really inspire confidence...)
