..and this list is not even exhaustive.... Garbage!.. ...and the "New Improved Secure Firewall" is also crap and can be completely disabled by the exploit of a simple worm modifying a single entry in the registry. So don't let it be your only defense.

I'm running XP SP2 on my studio workstation with no problems whatsoever.

By the way, why anyone would be using any of that software listed is beyond me.

Those are all very weak applications and I'm not surprised those applications have problems.

Well, many people would be runing such software because

a) it came with their computer and they don't have the financial resources/knowledge and expertise/need/desire to replace them

b) they failed to consider that "NBA LIVE 2000" might be a 'weak application' and simply enjoyed playing a fun game...

c) they lack your infinite wisdom in choosing only the best and most powerful applications to outfit their home computers with.

Of course, many people would say the same for windows itself.

I received my CD in about 10 days time.

It took 30 mins. to install.

So far all is fine.

we can't all be as bright as you..some of us still use "weak" applications.

I don't remeber where but I read somewhere that SP2 wasn't of much use. The IE bugs are still there and some programs seize to funtions from time to time... is that true?

I updated my WinXP to SP2 with no problems at all, so far.

Not no happy anymore...
When I was shuting down my system some minutes ago, I got a BSoD stating IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL blah blah. Strangely, I had to shut down the system because my CPU was under 100% load, even having no (regular) applications running (the process "alv.exe" was the one eating up the CPU, due to unknown reasons).
If this happens again, I will downgrade my WinXP back to SP1 using a backup image of my partition "before sp2" ....

To get or not to get Windows XP Service Pack 2? That is the question

The talk in the computer world seems to be whether or not to get Microsoft's Windows XP Service Pack 2. Both sides of the argument offer pros and cons as to whether or not computer users should proceed with this upgrade. By fall, computer users won't have to worry about making that decision, as computers running Windows XP will come preinstalled with SP2.

I recently was asked my views on the SP2 matter, so here's my short and sweet take on the issue. Usually, I would say, quick, get your Microsoft updates ASAP. This time, I will start by saying proceed with great caution.

First and most important, make sure you do your homework on this upgrade, as it's not your ordinary update. Read the special notices that Microsoft has posted on its site, especially the Windows XP Service Pack 2 page at www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx. It will tell you the benefits of SP2 and it features links to various other online resources. Then do a Google search on "Windows XP SP2" and read others views on it.

Secondly, make sure you visit your computer's manufacturer's site to check for any XP SP2-related news updates. While you are there, make sure you get the latest drivers for your hardware and upgrades for any pre-installed software. Microsoft has posted a list of software programs that are known to have compatibility problems after the SP2 update at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242.

I feel really bad for the folks using dial-up who want to do the upgrade because this upgrade is huge - 75MB in size. If you are one of the dial-up folks, I hope you have plenty of free time and a really good connection to your ISP. Otherwise, I would suggest that you have Microsoft send you a free copy of Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD by visiting www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx. It will take about four to six weeks before it will arrive. After you're done with it, you can let another dial-up friend borrow it.

The system requirements posted on Microsoft's site for this update are: a 233MHz processor, 64MB RAM and 1800MB of free hard disk space. Especially take notice to the hard drive space as the other two requirements should have been met prior to installing XP.

In closing, I would suggest that if you are currently working on a big project on your XP system, wait until after it is completed to do the update and as always, backup your files. Better safe, than sorry.

Every new Service Pack and it's always the same old history. The details differ, but the essence is the same: don't blindly trust Microsoft.

viol - that's probably spyware (alv.exe). That's been the biggest issue so far. Spyware is causing stop errors. We got several hundred installed seats of SP2, and we haven't had a single problem yet.

Oh, Sorry, Pugzly, I made a mistake, it's not alv.exe but alg.exe.

According to the properties dialog, it's a Microsoft file, "Application Layer Gateway Service", version 5.1.2600.2180. I know it's very easy to make an exe file with some fake properties info, but this one for me is not fake.

I never had such a problem before. So far, it hasn't happened again.

In the last hours, my computer went definitely crazy. Blue screens of death all the time, rebooting, locking, so with some difficulty to get a stable moment, I was able to uninstall SP2 and apparently, it's back to normal.

Strange because I never had a problem with a MS Service Pack before. And this is a new computer, with only "famous" parts (like Intel, Asus, ATI, Corsair, etc...) so apparently drivers would not be a problem.
And I am in the process of installing a bunch of applications, because I have just assembled this new computer, with fresh install of everything. I had instaled, well, I have, only a small part of the applications I want to install. I don't even have Photoshop installed already. So, even with so few apps installed SP2 was able to make a mess here...

Too bad, I liked the new features of IE.

The information in this thread was so helpful that it compelled me to join so I could post my response and experience with SP2.
I updated my perfectly fine, working PC running Win XP Pro from SP1 to SP2 a couple of days ago.
My father had updated his PC and had no problems what so ever so thought I'd have a go.
All initially went according to plan, SP2 downloaded, installed, time for reboot. Restarted and I went into a boot loop with a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL STOP error. Worth noting that nothing could get past this error, Safe mode, nothing.
I have twin drives running a version of XP on each so I was able to boot up in the other and everything was still working so it was obviously software and not hardware. Especially as everything was working just fine before hand. So I basically unplugged everything but the monitor and dug out an old keyboard and mouse. After that it at least managed to boot up into windows. It did some kicking and screaming at first with it sorting itself out with Zone Alarm firewall and my virus software but after a few more reboots it eventually settled down.
Then is was a case of plugging things back in to see where the problem was. First thing was my wireless optical mouse. Cheap thing from A4 Tech. Plugged the USB receiver in and it crashed and rebooted. So I'd found my culprit first try. Unplugged it, used my old mouse to navigate to the A4 Tech web site where I downloaded the latest Win XP SP2 compatible driver, installed it and everything's working just fine now.
So to anyone experiencing similar issues after a SP2 update I suggest you unplug everything first and then boot up with only a monitor, keyboard and mouse hooked up. Then connect things one at a time until you find out what causes you problems. If nothing else, removing everything connected to your PC might just be enough to enable you to boot up and restore your system to a previously working state.
I'm no techy so I hope this simple process of elimination approach might help you sort things outs.
As to SP2 itself ... only had it working one night. Not had chance to run games on it yet so I guess we'll see. I'm just happy for the thing to be booting up successfully for now.
