I'm thinking about making an interface - artwork that looks like a cd player. However, I need to know what the symbols are called that stand for play, fast forward, stop, etc... so I can do a google search to see if they are offered as custom shapes. Any ideas?

in the time it took you to compose that post and fire up your web browser you could have made those simple suckers! Squares, rectangles and triangles right?! Or are you talking about something else?

yep...

custom shapes????

I have to mention, however, that they can be found in the 'wingdings' or the 'webdings' font, if need be...

but....triangles and squares.

Guys... you should know by now there is a method to my madness. I try to keep a "library" of shapes that I use a lot, such as the pill shape. I didn't want to make the same triangles and squares all over each time I did an interface. Just seemed easier to get them as custom shapes (or fonts) so I didn't have to reinvent the wheel.

It was also a curiosity question, if those symbols had a specific name.

You just want a collection of like-styled media controls? I get why you'd want to find them, I suppose.

Haven't got a clue where to look though.

It's very understandable why you would want to keep an shape as a.....shape if you use it frequently.

You can save your shapes as shapes quite easily too....

If I had to guess, I'd say their names would be "play, fast-forward(or cue), rewind, stop, pause"

I don't know that I'd call drawing a square and triangle "reinventing the wheel". I think there must be some sort of complexity requirement to use that phrase

*laughter* You got me. This all seemed so complex yesterday. Guess I got stuck on a train of thought that would not let me change tracks. Damn oxycodone. Now I see why the warning says I should use care when driving a car.

Actually, the solution came to me this morning. All I have to do is create each button with the appropriate symbol on it as a layer set. Then I could drag the set to each interface I create as needed.

Hey - it's not really that off the wall to ask if the symbols have technical names. I myself just learned that there is a name for the "#" symbol, and that name is "octathorpe".

Wow. I musta been living under a rock for the last, uh, several decades to not have known that. Oh well. Better late than never.

I thought the # was called "sharp". I've heard several times C# being called C sharp. And Dictionary.com says so, but for the musical symbol.

[edit] Tyberius Prime: Actually, it's also called hash. [/edit]

There are all kinds of names for it, depending on it's usage.

But there is always a "technical" term for things like this. THough whether it's octathorpe or octothorpe seems to be hotly debated.

Wouldn't you refer to the little shapse on the control buttons for a player 'icons'?

I recently looked up the spelling of octothorpe and found that each of the little lines coming off the square is called a thorpe, and since there are eight of them ... octothorpe.

-- not necessarily stoned... just beautiful.

That's an interesting bit of trivia. I always thought that the symbol was called pound.

I suppose you could call them icons but then you get led into the argument of what is a symbol and what is an icon.

Not a bad little thread given it all started with a painkiller indused lack of lucidity.

Why not label the squares "equilateral and equiangular quadrilaterals"
and use "three-sided polygons" for the triangles?
