Topic awaiting preservation: Tell-A-Friend link from Flash CD to Website (Page 1 of 1)

Hi all-

I'm brand spankin' new to this forum. I don't really know a lot of languages, but can handle Javascript kinda easily. Here's the project:

I'm a singer, and I'm creating an electronic promo kit on a CD. There's going to be a bio, song samples, photos, blah blah blah, & it will be the passed out to anyone I encounter in the music industry. Putting all of this info on the CD is fine.

HOWEVER...

I'm putting the same EPK on my website. I want to create a "Tell-A-Friend" link from the CD that will point to the EPK online, and send the online EPK to the friend. I want whomever has the CD to pass around the exact same information to his/her friends in the industry with just a click.

Is there a way to do this in Javascript? If there's no way to do it in JS but it can be done in other ways, are you willing to help me? [You'll go in the credits on the CD]. I rather be playing my keyboard than figuring out code Please make me a happy chick!

The simplest way is to create a form page on your website and put a link to that on the CD.

When they click the CD link, it will open up your site and they can fill in the details.

Thanks Silence- That would work for the most part.

But...what if they're on a modem? (don't laugh...I'm still on a modem My little BS job has me choosing between a speedy connection and gas. Damn BS jobs. Damn OPEC!)

Well, where's the problem?
A 'just a form to mail' page should load fast enough over modem.

Unfortunatly, there's no reliable way to send a mail directly from a clients machine (not only thanks to the spam flood leading to many dial-up network segments from being blocked of sending their own mail).
You'll need somthing on the server - you could in theory even display the form on the CD and just submit it to your webserver. But online access is needed anyhow.

Yes, just provide a warning that they will need an internet connection before they click.

I hate to put a spanner in the works, but there may be issues with people using winxp sp2. It will probably throw up security warnings if a link from a CD tries to load a page from the web. I may be wrong... but it really is quite strict about mixing local zone with internet zone.

Is it? Even if it's not called from a web browser? I have avoided installing SP2. If it is being opened from a standalone Flash application, even?

You know what I hate? The fact that there are, like, 173 different versions of Windows. Why people can't get it right and stick to it I have no clue. Oh well...

I think a cheap-o way of bypassing that is to use a mailto: function, and place the url with some other text in the body. Most people will see the body of the e-mail and just click send. Others might want to manipulate it. I really didn't want to do that, but I rather use something that I know will work all around.

Look at how pop singers go out of fashion with each generation. The same goes for the software industry. Things change over time. New features get released. Old features die out. People demand new features. It's called evolution!
