I plan to make some wallpapers for a website and would like to know what is possible on Mac OS.
Is it possible to set a picture and center it ? make it fit the screen resolution ? tile accross the screen ?
If it's not possible to center a picture and set the background color, what are the Apple specific resolutions ?
Please excuse my ignorance I've never used a Mac more than 2hours in a row.

I'm not much help as I don't have a Mac with a crazy widescreen like their displays or the 17" powerbook.. My 12" pbook is at a rather normal 1024x768 and i can stretch/center the wallpaper

Macs have the ability to stretch, center, and tile a background image.
They have all the resolutions that Windows has, and then some (Mac support very high resolutions better than Windows).
Basically, any wallpapers you do for Windows will work fine on a Mac. Just remember that the icons on a Mac are on the right, while they are on the left on windows, not to mention Mac's title bar is at the top, while the Windows toolbar is at the bottom, so don't put any specific detail right next to any of the edges.
Also, matching the Mac's color scheme and clean theme helps.

Mac resolutions are typically either the classical 4:3 horizontal:vertical seen for typical CRT monitors, or the 8:5 typically found in modern digital wide screens. As for the number of pixels modified by those proportions, those used to be a little off from those found on classical PCs, but are today the same multiples of 2 that have become so usual in the PC business. Basically, if you can find it on a PC screen, you can also find it on a Mac screen.

Thank you guys.
I realise my questions sounded stupid, but I wanted to be sure.
As I plan to make something extremely sober : there should be only a slightly enriched logo in the middle of the screen. That's why I wondered if it is possible to set the background color too on a Mac to have the appropriate background color. That way I could release the logo ( in 2 versions to match the classical resolutions and the really high ones ) and won't have to do many versions ( e.g. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1600x1200, 1920x1440 and other weirdo res. like 1280x768, 1280x720, 800x848, ... )

well....(on windows anyway) they're wherever you put them...
my task bar has always been at the top - the bottom just makes no sense to me. my icons are usually spread aross the top well....

Mine is usually at the top as well, but 95% of Windows users leave the default...

Uh, you can move the icons around to wherever you want on all platforms. Also, instead of having a Windows toolbar, OS X users have the Dock which, like Windows can be placed on the top, buttom, left, or right.
My resolution is 1440 x 900.

I'm talking DEFAULTS.
Most users don't like to change them, y'know? And since poi is trying to cater to everyone, I thought it might be worth mentioning.

And how many Mac users are using the default? I think the only place you find a Mac user that uses the default is in shared environments, such as schools. All Mac users I've ever met have used everything set according to personal preferences. Very few, for instance, tend to place the dock at the bottom of the screen, which is the default placement of it.

The 256b.com wallpapers are online. Finally, I only provided a 512x384 image with a .txt file to give the background color. ( #e0e0e0 )

I like, especially on the little ghosty one. I'm not sure I so like the blur around the text.. it creates a smudgey-like effect which contrasts with the clean, polished, crisp look my brain wants to expect. All in all though, I like it.
And, liorean, I tend to keep the general layout defaults. I think the bottom of the screen is the prime location for the dock, though I do indeed set my own wallpapers and such. (Sloppy focus! Yay!)

I've uploaded a darker variant of the 3 wallpapers. They look better in my bat-cave, hum... my bed room, and are less aggressives for long periods of use.
