Topic awaiting preservation: When the Bird Attacks!

Does anyone have any experience with mad ravenous parrots!!

You see my elder brother got a parrot for his birthday and the bird hates his guts! I mean she loves playing and fooling around with me and even waves at me from time to time with her wing and also, if she's in a good mood, tries to copy what I say but she just hates my brother from bottom to top! He gives her an almond and she snatches it and then goes to bite him! He tries talking to her and she starts screaming like mad! While me on the other hand she likes being fed by me and occasionally calls when I leave the room.

Maybe it's the fact that my brother's nearly 7 feet tall and weighs roughly over the scale that scares here then again maybe it's my animal magnatisim but I guess she likes me better than the rest of the family. I'm posting this because my brother wanted me too and he's got a knife to me neck!

So anyone got any suggestions on what he should do?

get a cat, and let the parrot fly freely : )

But neither of us like cats ... or dogs... or horses... camels... and the rest of the animal kingdom I guess except for those huge lizards you know Komodos!!

Are you sure the parrot shouldn't be yours?

Anyway, I guess just spending time with the parrot would help for him. As the parrot becomes used to him, it should dislike him less... or so I would think. Especially if seeing him is combined with a positive stimulus, such as a treat of some kind.

It may be more his aftershave than your animal magnetism, but having witnessed neither, who knows ?

What kind of parrot is it? Do you spend more time with the bird than he does? If so, it sounds like the bird may be bonding to you. Was the bird raised in captivity? Hand fed as a baby? How old is the bird now? Where did you get it? A pet store or breeder? Birds who spend long periods of time in pet stored tend to start off pretty cranky and defensive when you first bring them home. What diet are you prescribing the animal? Nutrition is another important factor.

There are many factors that could contribute to the dislike, and it may not be dislike at all, many times the parrot will consider such things as a game. My Cockatoo is very picky about who she befriends, and on the rare occasion she does, she is totally trusting. On the other hand if she chooses to dislike, she will panic even if that person comes near. She will bite on occasion, but only if the person gives her incentive. Does your brother yell when he is bitten? If so, this will cause more bites, the parrot sees this as a game or a means of control. Birds can be very neurotic creatures in captivity, and the way we see our actions are not exactly the way parrots see them.

Is your brother loud, boisterous, noisy? Does he maybe walk on his heels (causing vibrations in the house)? Any of these could contribute. The key is calmness, no sudden, quick, or jerky movements, and to never show his fear of the animal. Birds are pretty mischievous and will take advantage of any weakness and uncertainty you show. What DocileBob mentions could also have something to do with it. My bird to this day cannot stand the smell of alcohol and will avoid anybody with it on their breath.

Other than that it is about patience, he must spend time talking to the bird, and talk in calming and soothing tones, never yell at it (yelling at a bird does nothing anyway, they don't really understand that concept and just think you are squawking and singing like birds in the wild do). If the bird is trying to bite hard he should not even attempt to touch her at this point. He must gain some trust beforehand. Letting your brother feed the bird, if he is not already, will also help in the trust category. It takes time, took me a year to get my bird to even warm up to me.

Well the bird is a female Indian Ring Neck. You know the ones with nice lucious green feathers, really soft dude, red beaks and long long tails. She's pretty young as I can tell by her size which is quite small. She's really cute I'll take a few photos and show

Out of all you've said there Ramasax I guess my bro's all that!! He's loud, obnocious and overall noisy. And he does walk in a sort of heavy way maybe that's what scares the little dudette. About biting, she literally attacks him while with me she tries to bite but only plays. She does grab on to my finger now and then but only holds it in her beak for a few seconds and then lets go with a few loud chrips but with my brother it's like she's going to break loose of those bars and rip him to shreds, she's screaming and running about in her little cage, and yes yelling is followed after an attack!

But the weird thing is she stays mostly with him and see's him most of the time but she likes me and my other brother better than him! She doesn't even like my mom! Maybe I should get her some toys perhaps that would soothe her urge to bite! Are there any toys for birds? I've been meaning to get her a little swing just to pass the time when she's alone maybe that'll help.

In food we mostly feed her fruit and chillies plus she just loves her nuts, almonds and pistachues are her favs she like chillies as well but only prefers to eat them out of my hand as if anyone else would give her one she'd just drop it and if it's my bro lunge in for the attack!!

Do you think it's animal instinct that makes her attack my bro? Perhaps she sees him has some over grown vulture or buzzard! I mean he does make weird sounds around her. We got her from a friend who bought her some time back then just couldn't handle her anymore. Whenever he comes around she starts talking alot.

Oh well, it's only been like two weks since we got her, I guess she'll eventually get the hang of us but I think it's size that alarms him alot. My brothers huge I mean his weight his over the scale! I on the other hand am nice and slim compared to him as is my other brother and the guy who we bought her from... perhaps he should drop a couple of pounds before he tries to soften up to her!


Note: I'd like to express that she hasn't bit anyone yet just tries to bite. As I said before she grabs my finger and just lets go after some time... I think I taste good... or bad!

Make him feed the bird, and give it the toys and treats etc.

I think the biting is cause of salt--isn't it?

Buy your brother some slippers or something, and tell him to be quieter. Also tell him to stop with the noises.

And if he's licking the bird, tell him to stop that, too.

Perhaps that's why she's so picky on what to watch on tele! She only like programs with lots of color, on other scenes she'd just move he head away.

ahhh, now it all makes sense, perhaps her violent tendancies are subject to the fact that she watches these 'horror' films. Try putting on feature length cartoons, such as the Care Bears, things that don't have violence involved.

Next thing you know she'll be playing Doom and all hell will break lose!

Well actually we found out why she hates my brother alot. She hate's her cage, we've been meaning to change that. The rod in the centre on which she stands alot isn't round it's square so her feet are stretched out and when we put her in her cage we had to grab her with a big piece of cloth and just put her in her cage. Now guess who was the first person she saw when the cloth was lifted.




Yup, my brother! Well she's softened up to him a bit now. Still to be on the safe side I guess I better rent some 'My Little Pony' movies... yeesh... I never thought I'd ever say that!

Seriously: make her watch Sesame Street. See if it actually makes her learn anything.

Cartoons don't always have to be boring for adults. For example, Animaniacs usually has a lot of adult material. Then there's Batman: Animated Series. If you are feeling really adult, try Stripperella by Stan Lee.

It's been awhile, but Adult Swim usually has a good line up.

Then there are things like Spawn, Gahan's The Kid, and La Blue Girl...
...and Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North Star (Hokuto No Ken), and Legend of the Overfiend.

(The live-action Hokuto No Ken movie was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. It was almost as good/bad as Ricky Oh.)

Hmmmmm.... ... ... ... this Stripperella sounds interesting!!! Wait... nibbles is a female it might be offending to her! Any bird brained super hero cartoons out there?!

Ok my bird's finally starting to like us. BUT!!! Something new has come out... for some weird reason she keeps sticking her tongue out as if she's taunting us or something. It just stays out for a couple of micro seconds but it's still weird!

And one more thing... there appears to be some sort of invisible red zone in her cage! Anything that goes in those area's is a show in for an attack!! Also I don't think this is weird but more cute. We keep her cage on a short table and place a newspaper below her so she doesn't mess up that perfectly good piece of wood! Recently I've noticed her tearing the newspaper below her and using it to actually 'clean' her cage... ha now isn't that cute
