Soldiers Once ... And Young

"Iraq combat veterans offer raw, compelling testimony to the horrors of war and the anguish of returning home."

I feel that this side of the war doesn't receive much attention, so I decided to share it here. Note that I am speaking as a Veteran myself - irregardless of the questions surrounding the War itself. This is the cost.

You're right, it doesn't get much attention. People prefer to believe war is much less horrific than it actually is. "War is hell" is not just a cliche, it's about as close to being literally true as possible as far as I can tell.

The cost of war should be reported far more than it is. And equally, if not more so, the benefits of that sacrifice should be reported so the sacrifices can be put into perspective. But sadly, neither of these two items will garner as many ratings for news organizations as the usual crap they focus on. Ultimately, it comes down to the stories the general public hungers for and that is where the ultimate responsibility should be placed, square on the shoulders of the general public.

When I thank war veterans for their service, I do so fully in mind to what that service entails.

Imagine the horror of the families of those that send their 8 year old sons and daughters into a military area with explosives strapped to their stomachs. Oh wait, they don't have any horror because they are martyrs.

Let's not forget *what* we are fighting just because the media wants us to dwell on articles such as these. Yes, it's a tragedy that someone is forver scarred by their experience in a war zone. Equally, devastating to the families they leave behind. But to imply that protecting our country from another 911 is wrong because people are dying is like saying we don't deserve to be free. The dilemma is: is it wrong to protect ourselves from people who would send their women and children to die as suicide bombers? It's happened, or maybe that didn't make the news.
