Situation: for some reason my host couldn't charge my account for a new year of hosting. They now have the money, but apparently my domainname ( mahjqa.com ) has already been stolen by a bunch of [content deleted due to inappropriateness].
Buying my domain back is not an option. Let the bastards pay for their stolen domain consisting of random letters 'til they're blue in the face.
Possible solution: Registering either majqa.com (without the H for easier typing and remembering), vayamenda.com ( a name I've been tossing around for a while) or possibly, mahj.com.
Which one would you recommend?

[ content not even written due to a lot insults and bird names ] domain name whores.
Registering majqa.com or eventually mahjqa.net or .org seems to be the best options.

We have done so.

That really sucks, mahjqa. I would go with majqa.com if I were you. Actually, as hard as I try, I can never remember how to spell mahjqa. I think I can remember majqa a little easier. When people ask about the new spelling just tell them it's a variant spelling used in certain regions of the Klingon empire

What a bummer Mahjqa! As far as I can tell, they have no reason at all for using your name, it does not relate to the content of the new Mahjqa.com at all.
Well I suppose you could;
Change the name slightly (as you have suggested)
Add to the name eg, I_Mahjqa, Mahjqa_1, or even something like, Mahjqa's_Palace.
Or more drastically, decide on a completely new name for your webspace.
Personally, I would go for adding to the name, if that did not work for me I would decide on a completely new name for my site and keep Mahjqa as my online name.
I think you may have been toying with the idea of changing your name from Mahjqa for quite a while, perhaps I'm wrong? If you were thinking of a name change then this may be the moment to consider it further.
Btw, I have had a terrible urge to email the perpetrators of this domain name stealing, to inform them that I would never, ever do any biz with them because of this.
I will not follow that particular urge yet untill I clear it with you Mahjqa

That really sucks to hear, Mahjqa. I'm curious to know how long a lag there was between when your "ownership" of the domain lapsed and when those dirty so-n-so's stole it from you. There are domain snatchers out there that pull crap like that.
I'd go with something totally new, yet related to you somehow. I'm in a similar situation, with all sorts of variations on my online name being taken or just not practical to use. That's one of the reasons my website is called "le coeur du feu," because I can't get any .com or .net variations on "rhyssa" or "fireheart" last I checked, and making people type out my full online name is cruel and unusual IMO.
The only thing with going with a whole new name is that you're rather stuck with it if you ever decided to change the name of your site for some reason. I wouldn't put a number in there, because then it looks like you are the copy-cat, but adding to it (like Majhqas_Palace) isn't a bad idea. I'd make sure to put somethimg up about how some &*&%)## stole your domain as well.

fucktards. Nearly had the same happen to me, it didnt get snapped up though, less hits I guess.
.net .org ? or even .tv
Or go with something completly different, wigglypixels.com or something, hits will be mostly from links so what it is or how its spelt isnt so important. How often do you tell people of your site ? You probably have to spell it out like myself anyway.
Heres a thought, if you got a new domain and registered it as a company, then let your domain expire , could you in turn sue the crap out of those arseholes ? What if you register mahjqa.com as a company that sells old toast/red pixels. Wouldnt you then have the right to dispute its ownership. Like mcdonalds.com (used to belong to a couple with the same second name) among others.
Any lawyers out there ? It would be just great screwing those evil companies, like those companies that sell ringtones and other worthless shite with evil evil ads.
Qatar (is a country apparently) Their ISO country code is .qa .Register mahj there ? It could be cheap.

.com.qa for commercial use
.net.qa for Internet activities
.org.qa for non-for-profit organizations
.edu.qa for educational institutions
.gov.qa for governmental entities

Or just use the coughdutchcough solution, can you still acces the content from the site? Just keep using it and let them pay... or put an big sign on the front page saying something like:
"This domain name is happily stolen from me by `fill_in_thieves_company_name_here'
Al content is owned and produced by me bla bla bla but i am grateful that company_X is willing to pay my domain name....bla bla bla"
good luck mate.

Sue the Web Services Provider and then the domain squatters for compensatory and nominal damages. You had an implied-in-fact contract with the WSP to provide you with a domain name for a fee. They violated that agreement by not securing the domain long enough for the transaction to complete. You've already demonstrated intent to pay for the domain. In order for the agreement to purchase the domain to be discharged, complete or substantial or satisfactory performance of the contract must be evident. That is not the case here. Here you have the WSP, the breaching party, who failed to perform on the contract and thus resulted in the loss of your domain.
The new domain's registrant is...
Organization Name: Jaguar Technologies LLC
First Name: client_of
Last Name: jaguar

When reading the title of this thread, I can't help thinking to a song of Charles Trenet saying : quote: Boum
Quand notre c?ur fait Boum
Tout avec lui dit Boum
Et c'est l'amour qui s'éveille.
Boum
Which in english becomes more or less : quote: Boom
When our heart does boom
Everything say Boom with it.
And that's love that wake up.
Boom
In short, Mahjqa : Love is the answer. Don't be bitter towards the domain whores and take it as an occasion to recreate a brand new site.

The exact how's and why's are unclear to me at the moment, but apparently the issue has been solved. Apparently, as soon as my registration ran out the domain was pointed to a random "search" site (wether this was done by a third party or my own host is unclear) but after a bit of emailing to and fro (and a charge of 10 bucks for repurchasing the domain) it's all mine again. Phew.
However, I think I'll still get mahj.com as a secondary domain, for convenience's sake.
When googling for new domain names (majqa, vayamenda) I typed in "majqa". Google said "did you mean to spell it 'mahjqa'?" .... I love that thing.
I suppose it's going to be very hard ever to get rid of this nick
quote: You probably have to spell it out like myself anyway.
Yup, indeed. That's why I'm getting mahj.com for convenience's sake. Thanks, everyone, for the support and ideas... I got off really easy this time.

- hi sorry to hear about all this - but I'm curious any chance its some kinda elaborate hoax [edit: by which i mean con] to get you to pay out more money?
- also re: buying domain name similar to the one you already have, do you intend to use it, or just buy the name? - what I mean by that is, I know that some people opt for buying similar names, and do some kinda mirroring? (is that what its called) - just curious if that was your intention- cos it means shelling out even more money!
anyways, good luck...

As someone who provides hosting services and domain name services, I would recommend that you DIRECTLY handle all domain name related issues DIRECTLY with the registrar.
When we purchase a domain name for a client, we transfer it to them as soon as the site is up and running and they've paid their bill. We don't like to hold on to them, because it causes excess overhead. It's also a pain when the client's company goes out of business just before their hosting plan expires, but doesn't tell you. Because you then renew the domain name before you find out.
It's ALWAYS in your best interest to keep things in your name. Domain name(s), hosting, etc.

I'm with Pugzly 100% on this one, although I go a step further.
For years and years I recommended to clients that since the domain registration is the single most important aspect of their online identity that it always be handled in-house by responsible people. Never let anyone else--especially not your hosting provider--handle it for you.
Now that I provide hosting services too, I take my own advice by not even offering domain registration. I refer clients to the list of ICANN Accredited Registrars and tell them that I use GoDaddy myself. I'll help those who think the process of filling out an online form is "too complicated" and I will let them list my company as their Technical Contact. But I want nothing to do with any of the rest of it.
Citing examples like this one generally helps them understand why, but I have lost business due to this policy. I'd rather lose the business than put myself and a client in the situation you describe. Life goes on, I can sleep at night, and there are always more potential clients.
