"Hobbit" Discovered: Tiny Human Ancestor Found in Asia
Pretty cool!!
I wonder if there really is a basis for all those fairy, gnome, and dwarf myths?

Still I wouldn't mind shaking hands with a Gnoll or a Troll... preferably under a bridge! Do you think any exist, I mean we got a Hobbit why not a Golem or something?!?

Neanderthals existed at the same time as modern humans. Perhaps they were the trolls? (Mapping Human History)

Always has been--especially cause a lot of the things that we shoot for in science, we read in books

Some more info - Tiny fossil upends history of evolution
I find this very interesting - quote: The discovery means that about 50,000 years ago, there were four species of humans roaming the Earth at the same time: Homo sapiens (us), Homo erectus, Neanderthals and this new relative, called Homo Floresiensis (also called Flores Man).
Details appear in today's issue of the journal Nature.
The specimens' ages range from 95,000 to 12,000 years old, meaning they lived until the threshold of recorded human history and perhaps crossed paths with the ancestors of today's islanders.
Another thing of interest -
quote: Instead, it suggests recent evolution was more complex than previously thought.
And it demonstrates that Africa, the acknowledged cradle of humanity, does not hold all the answers to persistent questions of how -- and where -- we came to be.
"This finding really does rewrite our knowledge of human evolution," said Chris Stringer, who directs human origins studies at the Natural History Museum in London. "And to have them present less than 20,000 years ago is frankly astonishing."
Scientists called the dwarf skeleton "the most extreme" figure to be included in the extended human family. Certainly, she is the shortest.
She is the best example of a trove of fragmented bones that account for as many as seven of these primitive individuals that lived on the equatorial island of Flores, east of Java and northwest of Australia
Why do I find this so fascinating? Well, Australia also has the bones of a Giant race of either Hominids, or a close relative. This could explain the Myths and Legends that many Aboriginal peoples (around the world) have about Fey, Goblins, Dwarves, Giants, Trolls, etc. It also might be relative to the Bible, if one reconsiders the "Out of Africa" theory, and instead uses Australia. Australia was before very green - a "Garden of Eden", if you will, that changed to a desert...this was not all that long ago, Geologically speaking. It is perhaps an interesting thought to consider.

I'm assuming you mean Gollum, becuase otherwise you're talking about big clay statues that are animated by holy words in thier heads.

As quoted from wordIQ (Definition of Golem) quote: A golem (sometimes pronounced Goilem), in medieval folklore and from Jewish mythology is an animated being crafted from inanimate material.
So you assume right. And I think it would be nice to meet a Golem if one existed although it would more crush my hand than shake...

Could the "hobbits" still be living? Scientist are speculating the possibility
I think this is absolutely fascinating. I share your opinion on this one WS, about the possible connection to humanlike creatures of myth. It just goes to show yet again just how much we have left to learn about this little planet...

Absolutely fascinating, indeed!
My people have legends of the "little ones", as well..I used to regard these stories as mere Myths. Maybe I should give them more thought.
Truly incredible.

To correct a minor factual error, for the last 10,000 or so years Australia's climate has remained unchanged.

[quickpost] I haven't read the article yet, but in the news today, it's been said that the rests of 6 Flores Men ( and women ) had been found so far. The first one was ~18.000 yo, and some tools found nearby are estimated to be ~800.000 yo which let to think that that species have been on the Flores Island for a long period. [/quickpost]
The idea that the co-existence of several "human species" lead to some myths doesn't sound that unlikely. The language and pictural representation were already elaborated at the time of Nehandertal.

Which minor factual error? I don't recall anyone actually suggesting the opposite.

Makes me so happy whenever science discovers something like this. Though it would be a little scary if they found some still living. I shudder to think of what "government" or scientists would do to them, considering society's struggle with difference of skin color.
It does do my heart good to see something like this rock the scientific world though. I think what we know as a planet should be shaken up every now and again. Remind us that no, we don't know everything. Not even close.
