Lousy clouds got in the way of most of the lunar eclipse last night, but I did manage to pop off a few fairly decent shots. Not too bad for my first attempt at astrophotography.

For the curious, I captured these using my Canon 10D attached to a Celestron 4GT, seen here.

A lot better than my pics, which were more like.. nothing. Just black cause the camera couldn't see the moon and I didn't know how to configure the settings to fix it.

Thanks, guys. I'm still surprised they came out as well as they did. Focusing was a bit of a problem, since it had to be done with the scope and the 10D's focusing screen isn't very helpful with manual focusing. It was basically turning the focus knob back and forth until I could judge where the middle between back focus and front focus was.

By the way, no cropping was performed on those. The focal length of the NexStar was perfect for placing the moon on the 10D's sensor.

Anyway, I think I'm hooked now. If I can really figure out how to align the NexStar accurately, I'll try to shoot a couple planets or maybe some galaxies.

I think this is going to turn out to be another expensive hobby ...

Nice photos Wes. I think the Celestron 4GT is one of those you can programme to automatically select a "target" from a database of thousands, is it not?
Yoy may well have this link already but it's a nice source for all space weather related interests.

Sorry, asp, I didn't have a lot of time to mess with them, so I just ran them through a Photoshop action I had made for something else.

Tao, you're right about the 4GT, though I haven't had a lot of time to play with it. It actually belongs to my parents who will be moving to the country sometime next year, so I'm sure I'll play with it a lot out there.

And thanks for the link ... I was actually thinking of trying to shoot the sun next!

Thanks for a great link, Tao - without the heads up I would never have found that one .
Here's another link I often use looking in the other direction. NASA is amazing with the stuff they make available and their co-operation. The above site was down a while ago, and when I asked about it, they posted up a temporary site and sent a personal email apologizing for the inconvenience .
