If I want to put my pictures on a DVD for screaning on a TV (100cm wide) what is the best size?

1024x768 or 800x600 ?

are you runnin NTSC or PAL?

I work in NTSC so for video the resolution is 720 x 480 (72dpi)(or 720*486). The kicker is that TV pixels are rectangular and not square.

If you slap a square image pixel on a tvbox it will stretch it out. So if I do not want my images to look stretched out i actually make then 720*540 and either resize them down, or let my editing system resize them down when I import em buggars. (this is not all that noticeableon photos, but if you slap a perfectly round circle in there, it should be noticeable.)

Newer versions of PS actually muck around with the square and rectangular aspect ratios as well... but that gets a little confusing.

I kind of suspect you are working in Pal though... which i have never used.
