As much as I do love Tool, that is just absurd.

I felt dirty just reading....

I can pay $99 and get a membership certificate, a card with my 'member number', and a bunch of other "look at me, I'm part of the group" nonsense...

And other "goodies" depending on my "membership package".

Am I the only one who thinks that such membership things are totally ridiculous and asinine?

Did you mean "Army of Fools"?

Nope. I meant Army of tools, which is worse, IMHO. A fool is not necessarily a tool, but a tool is most definitely a fool, and more.

I'm sure that Peter could put that in much better prose as I can, but he rarely visits here anymore.

Absolutely. When I heard that they charged money for membership of a fanclub I felt utter disgust. And for a group of musicians, who have time and time again said 'it's all about the music' to make a fan club and charge money for it, it just leaves me wallowing.

It could be worse, though. We could have TOOL end up like the new APC and start making political albums and broadcasting propaganda all over their page.

A rock band. Some say they are a progmetal band, but I differ.

Pretty pricey for a bunch of crap. I am as much a Tool fan as the next guy, but c'mon.

I'd at least expect some type of way to interface with the collective on a subconscious level. You should get an implant or something for that price.

I like Tool, but hate fan clubs. Never thought I'd see the band Tool have "Membership Package" written on any page of their site. That's a damn shame, and they have lost too many cool points for me to justify ever buying their albums again. Oh well, another one bites the dust.

Y'know, I would call absurd the whole idea that just because someone has a fan club, you'd stop buying their stuff, even if it has got quality.

I for one, won't ever give a shit if King Crimson turned out to have like this obsesive compulsive fan clubs, because I like their music for what it is, not because they have idiotic people following them.

I would just like to point out that the site linked to is the fanclub site, and not the bandsite.

A minor difference perhaps, but potentially a very important one.

Even the "official" band site is still in reality a site by/for the label.

what could be called the "real" site for the band is here - http://toolshed.down.net/

DL, please tell me how www.toolband.com is a site for their label? I just don't see it.

I am not very familiar with the 'toolband' site in particular. Most of the time, however, the 'official' site for a band is one commisioned by their label.

It promotes the band, of course, as promoting the band also promotes the label.

I don't know what their label is. And I visit that website weekly (used to be daily).

Off the top of my head I think it's Volcano Records. But I haven't seen any referenes on their website. Even in the links section I don't think there's a link to to label.

Yeah, it is Volcano Entertainment IIRC. Although far as I can tell they don't even seem to have a site of their own.
