Hello all,

I guess in the past I have posted here asking for advice on taking a trip to Amsterdam, and I am seriously considering it now since there are some really good deals on airfare.

But I guess these deals are only good for flights up until the middle of March (the off season).

So I was wondering if any of you have advice, if you live in, or have been to Amsterdam during that time of the year, and if you think that the weather will be good enough for walking around and seeing the sights. Or if it will be too cold and rainy and it would be better to wait until May or June. The issue for me is that it would cost a whole lot more.

what do you think?

Well, the odds of getting better weather in May or June are better , but just slightly so. If in March the weather sucks, you can be pretty sure it won't be much better in May or June... but that's in general. Dutch weather is notorious for it's mood swings, so you could get lucky any time you come. The last couple of summmers have been quite warm, though. As for cold rainy weather.. there's nothing an umbrella won't fix.

Don't buy the highest quality dope right off the get go. Start light and work your way up.

Holland, in the early spring, end off winter, has ferry variable weather, with the sun still low in the sky, the rains, the winds, and the occasional warm day. It could surprise you with pouring rain, humid winds, a liitle snow or an perfect spring day which a lot of people uses to sit on the pavement chairs before a café. (I really don't know the english word for this, and i am pretty sure it is not "terrace.")

The bicycle is one of the bast ways to transport yourself between the city limits. Cars are just as slow or slower, besides this carpark regulations are notorious and expansive. Walking is ofcourse much slower but free, The public transport is pretty good with metro's trams and busses.
Amsterdam.nl>Traffic & transport : Bicycle On this page you could find some info about bicycle routes, and hiring bicycles.
Ofcourse you could buy a stolen bike from a tramp.....

There are a couple youth hostels which charge you +/- ?20 per night when you sleep on a dorm
Stayokay hostels click on amsterdam.

If you do plan your trip in Februari for some reasons keep in mind that februari is the coldest month of the year.

I suggest you to stay away from the drugs but if you do want to try them do NOT ever buy them from the guy on the corner. NEVER!!! Just go to a nice coffeeshop and ask for something light.

When planning a weekend i could team up with you for a day and show you something from our country besides Amsterdam.

Weather in Amsterdam

Thank you thank you for your replies,

About bicycling, so you are saying that it is not too cold or rainy to bicycle around? I would hate to get blown into a canal.. haha I guess taking the public transportation is the other option.

If you put the rain coat on, something on your head, something on your hands and something around your neck it will not be to cold. Getting blown in to the canals only happens to:
a) tourists who can not handle a bicycle
b) tourists who put too much "something" in their peace pipe
c) old people...
d)...

Pussy.*

Do what English tourists do - walk in demand the strongest drugs they stock on the premises and then about half an hour later beat a hasty (and rather queasy) retreat to your hotel room.**

Anyway I can recommend the Torture Museum and try and get to the Vrolik Musuem (it was shut when I was there but my wandering around the university campus asking for directions to a museum of medical oddities amused my friends).

* and yes I know there are a couple o ways to take that, as it were

** this is not intended to condone drug use - in fact the opposite

PS - Queens Day is one of the best days to arrive in Amsterdam (even if you suddenly find yourself standing in the middle of an all male crowd that seemed to favour leather and handlebar moustaches).

Qeensday 30 april the national holiday off the dutch very much fun. But also crowded, then even an bicycle does not help, and the public transport will get stuck in the mass of people.
