My roses are coming out... like crap.

I did some way back when, but they disappeared in the hard drive crash of 2002... oh it was a bad day indeed, the script, the words, the art, all lost in the tinkering of a weekend without back-up. I just knew I could get w98se to act like w2k if I just tweaked ever so slightly more... until, it happened.

Well, seeing as I used the Paint can speckled and irfanviewed filterized heady constructionist tools back then I thought pfft! No problem I can make one anytime I want in Photoshop. it's just a matter of... DOH!

So, I humbly stand in awe of the creative talents of the Asylun guru's and wonder aloud if anyone has a handy dandy Rose Tutorial?

Any WIPs you can put up would help.

Other than that, the only way I know of would be to create layers for the petals and go at it with the brushes. Keep building it up and you should get something halfway decent that you can use as a springboard.

I wish I was able to capture the nuances of the petals and create the whole thing from scratch but these two tutes give me an idea on where to start...

It's a painted image - so, go look for painting techniques.

As always, Nax has it...and noone got stabbed...I'm stunned.

The tutorial is simple really:

1) Look at roses.

2) Look at light.

3) Look at more roses.

4) Find a rose to look at in some light.

5) Repeat and paint.

As for the textures, etc. Use some imagination and hard brushes. Outline the whole thing, rough out the shape, then touch it up...change..touch it up...change...touch it up, move on to shadows...then highlights.

That's really as simple as it gets...texture and shape are just a function of light and dark...little bits here and there. Flat colour, now darken the shadows...darken more in small er areas...lighten the highlights, now lighten more in smaller, brighter areas.

VOILA!

Now show me something...because that link to google was brilliant.

Ack! my ineptitude is mind boggling... I am going back filters and text. I have no clue how to work with light and shadow... It's like kindergarten all over again.

*stomps feet and throws clay at the more talented kids... then searches for a big dump truck to knock over the other kids blocks*

Get rid of that solid background. As a whole your background is just as important as the foreground, so make sure the same lighting is applied. Never EVER work on a solid background - you'll be surprised at how much it will throw you off.
