timber: then by all means, show us what might be "professional enough", because your first post was vague and open, while your second is flatly stupid and arrogant.

If you come here asking for a tutorial, mostly you're going to get a standard "Read The Fucking Manual" or "Check Google, you lazy Fuck." Especially for something as alsoran and everyday as "shiny metal text". Christ, why not ask if there's a tutorial on how to make buttons while you're at it.

If you want something "professional" well there actually used to be a ton of professionals around here, some still show up I know. So ante up with what you're really looking for and maybe someone will be willing to help.

Or you could keep looking like a cunt in replies when people DO try to help and get yourself a ton of Sweet Fuck All. Personally I don't see you being worth the effort (aside from me venting), but feel free to prove me wrong.

Tool.

Well done. People genuinely wanted to, and did, help you. And you say "no that doesnt look professional enough" and "I like cheese". I'm glad I didn't post anything usefull. Please post your results, I'd like to know what you consider professional shiny metal(or steel?) text and what you're actually able to produce yourself.

Once upon a time...I wanted to make a really groovy looking metal plate. So I played some quake and etc, looked at some other rendered versions...Looked at some metal...pictures off google. Then I opened my photoshop. 20 some odd layers later and probably close to 18 hours to tweaking, studying, and more tweaking I got professional enough.

So go study quarters, forks, anything made of metal... to get a feel for the surface. Then spend some quality time with your copy of photoshop and post what you come up with and THEN you and the rest of the forum here will be speaking.

Took me a while to figure that part out. But you see, rocket scientists have formulas and constants and shortcuts. We're graphic artists, we have "Hey I wonder what would happen if I did THIS?!"

And while I'm at it, nice Satan-bread, Hugh.
(EDIT: The images of that metal plate I was talking about)

This was the base, took maybe 5 minutes of porking about with things...read the curves tut on guru's and blending modes/brightness/contrast might help it look shinier, but I was not going for shiny. as the following shows.

I exaggerated it's only about 14 layers.

That is suposed to be steel? Like made from iron, manganese and carbon???
Realy? i looks more like an over polished marmer to me.

Many people do make this mistake and think steel or metal is shiny and nice and glittering.
Well it's not. Most metals are either oxidized or coated against oxidizing. But almost always they look dull, dusty and older than your granpa.
Almost all mixes with iron will oxidize, but that is not the point since the most important feature off steel is it strengh and durability. Most metals can be shiny for a while but will always turn ugly by oxidation.
Copper: turns green and obtuse
Iron: Obtuse, turns red-brownish more brown after longer time
Aluminium: Obtuse gets darker, maybe white marks due humity.
Silver: gets black, not realy oxidation but a chemical reaction with the sulphur in the air.
Led: does only shine when molten
Quicksilver: does shine when liquid, but in solid form (frozen) it looks more like stone as metal.

So which metals do look shiny:

Gold: Does not react to oxigen or most other chemicals
Nickel: Gets grey, but could realy shine (blueish)
Chrome/chromium: Shiny when polished but could be also obtuse.
Nickelsteel:Iron, manganese, carbon and nickel alloy realy shiny when polished or brushed.
Stainless/Rust-proof steel: Iron, manganese, carbon and chromium alloy realy shiny when polished or brushed.
(poi's picture looks very good if it is suposed to be brushed nickel steel.)
Titanium: When pure it's very bright, but it mostly used in alloys which are all very light but mostly not shiny.

So if you don't know what you are talking about don't say it "not professional enough"
Here are some links to different pictures from different metals:

Steel:
Hull plates from yacht getting welded together .
Spare magnet steel from jefferson Labs

Gold:
Gold nugget
Gold in quartz

Titanium:
The guggenheim museum in barcelona has titanium plates on the outside.
Titanium watch

Others:
Valve pedals from different materials
Some scrap metals

class dismissed.

timber: The global texture on you image looks rather cool.
[sarcasm] Sure the aliasing and the dust and cracks on your image looks really professional. [/sarcasm]
