This product of one morning spent in Photoshop.
Something not quite right about it, the color was intended...not bad for total digital though I think.

Any thoughts?

well, it's missing highlights, especially th 'watery' part you see in eyes.

not bad for a first attempt though.

Well, what it's really missing is an eyeball

It looks pretty good overall, but without being attached to the rest of the eyeball there's not much point discussing it in depth.

One thing that is important enough to note: you have a bevel around the edge. This is very bad. You will never see an iris with any sort of beveled edge - it simply doesn't work like that. Any highlights on the eye will overlap the iris/pupil indiscriminately, as the highlight will actually be shining off of the cornea covering the entire eye.

So get it in its proper environement, and we can add some more useful commentary.

I think that the iris looks good. DL-44 is right about the bevel though.. The bevel makes it look like the iris of the eye is a button. Other than that i think the textures you created for the iris are very good.

Well I looked at some google images, it seemed the eye wasn't perfectly spherical instead the iris does protrude, I was attempting to imply that. I did catch the highlight thing and I'm working on that and the rest of the eye. Any tips for me in that area? I was always horrible with highlights.

Even though the eyeball isn't a perfect sphere (there is a lense as you have noted), you still aren't going to actually *see* a protrusion. This is one of the hardest things to overcome when trying to achieve realism - what you think you see isn't necessarily what you do see.

^ correct.

also, as noted in my first post, any protrusion there might be will still be covered by the cornea, meaning that any highlight is going to show on the cornea.

Again - we can't really give you tips on how to get the proper effect until the iris is attached to an eyeball...

One other note though - you'll notice that the inner edge of the iris is the mechanism for opening and closing the pupil, and that it loses color as it nears the edge, and you see what look like tiny muscles or fibers pulling the pupil open. (that's the purely scientific explanation )

Not too shabby. One thing you might want to take into consideration is that your eye isn't actually white; it's color is based off of surrounding objects - usually skin The iris is also slightly large in proportion to the rest of the eye.

So the iris should take up a greater percentage of the circle? maybe just shrink the circle?

(Edit: Errr, or you mean the iris I made is too big compared to the rest of the eyeball?)

Iris is a little small IMO, though its hard to tell as most of the eye is usually hidden. Great work on the iris tho. Also , the shine on the iris you have should also be on the white of the eye like a copy of it as its at the same angle and all that jazz.

And, not very constructive but how and ever, the eyeball looks like its made of marble, pretty convincing marble aswell if it was green and blue.

Yes, the iris is too big. In addition, the shading on the cornea makes it look as if it were beveled, instead of sphereical.

Hope you don`t mind, Slo, but I played with your eye a bit. Seemed a tad flat to me, so I added some highlights and shadows. Don`t know if it`s better or worse, but it was fun.

and the zipped .psd if you`re interested.

I'd like to retract my statement about the iris being too big. Its size looks fine to me.

heh, yeah. i noticed the light source ambiguity when I was showing the pic to a friend of mine going to RIT for photography.
She also mentioned something about adding depth to the outside of the iris, where it meets the...white part.

I like the shading pretty well, DB...think it might look better with a darker shadow side?
