How to silently & reliably verify that Java version X.X is installed on the remote computer?

The problem is (always, as usual...) in IE, today to find out that you are relying on windows scripting host which can be disabled. Is there any other way?

[easy_shot] why not putting an Applet using a Java version X.X feature on a page and point the users to install the correct version if they see nothing ? [/easy_shot]

Good thought, but it's been considered and not preferred in this case if it can be avoided.

I'm not doing this myself, it's a buddy here at work so I really don't have the details on why, exactly, they need it without loading an applet.

Thing is, we have a fairly large applet client that the player loads when he wants to start a game, we need to know before he trys to start it that he has the right version of the jvm installed.

In moz, ff and so on it's easy to sniff for java and other plugins as the page loads, but in IE you can only find this through the scripting host (as far as we know) and if that's disabled we can see that we cannot find out in advance what version, if any, is installed.

Then we are left with either loading the main game and risk a fail in parts of the game, or the player can be prompted to activate the scripting host so we can find out in order to tell them they need to upgrade and so on.
Neither option is attractive and we would really prefer another way if there is one.
