Do you have an example of what you've made so far? And maybe an example of what you really mean by text that looks like chocolate?

I can email you what I have done, or maybe upload it to this site. This is the first time I have used a discussion group so am not sure what is the best/usual way...?

This usual way of showing your work is to upload it anywhere you can and provide the link or include your picture within your post, so everyone can see it and give their opinion. You can certainly e-mail it to me if you wish, but I highly suggest you post it here, as there are a lot of people who will be able to help you.

Hi bella and welcome to the Asylum
You have your [img] tags the wrong way around btw, it should go [ img] [/img ] I've never tried to make choclate text before so I'll have a go and come back and let you know, and see, what I did. Basically it's brown, with what looks a bit likelayer styles. Is the text you linked to what you would like the text to look like or what you have done so far?

thanks for the image tag info. What I have linked to is what I have done using the chrome filter and then another layer with the plastic wrap filter and also fiddled around with the multiply setting in layers palette. I dont' think it looks enough like chocolate, it is more like brown chrome....

I am trying to have a got at it. Tao will be much more up to the task for that, as I expect, but I still like the idea of trying to do chocolate text - let's see what happens..

I just wanted to suggest something: The feeling you have that it looks more like brwon chrome might come from the fact that the font you use is a bit too angular, if you see what I mean. I am trying to do something with a rather round font and I reckon it helps a lot.

The other mistake I think you've done is that you basically have a plain colour in the middle of your letters and you should have some kind of texture - pieces of chocolate always have tiny holes and/or bubbles which I think comes from the way chocolate cools down after melting... well, you see my point...

Okie dokie then, perhaps you could also help us by doing what kimson suggested and show us an example of what you would like to achieve if possible. Your idea of chocolate text and mine may be different. I don't have much time to play at the moment but I did try a few styles in PS and my efforts came out like yours.
If you have not seen an example of chocolate text that you like, we can still work on it, it's just a little harder that's all

Bella, I have made something rather different from your attempt but do not have anywhere to upload it. Shall I send it to you via e-mail?

Tao,
I am interested to see what you come up with using a more rounded font. It may well look more chocolaty as you say, but part of my brief is to present a logo design that looks cool/trendy and a more rounded font may have a childish feel to it. Unfortunately I don?t have an example of what I am after, although I have just seen a chocolate ad on TV and the chocolate has very definite highlights. I am sure I could do something much better than the sample if I spent enough time on it. I was hoping to find a quicker and easier way.... And yes, I think it does need much more variation in colour.

Kimson,
Yes, please email it to me ? ckershaw@polka.co.za

"quicker and easier" is probably very far from what you need to get it looking good

Obviously there are huge variations in what chocolate can look like, so the most important part of this is having a very clear image of what you want.

Reference images (or real life references) are essential if you are trying to make something look like something else - the last thing you shoudl do is trust your memory.

so

1) references (real or photo)

2) clear concept of the direction to go in

3) the willingness to go for "longer and more difficult" as opposed to "quicker and easier"

^ those will get well along your way.

bella: Basically what they said - the important thing is to know what you are aiming for and to play with a variety of methods to get there. I'm "graphically challeneged" but I know that giving it a go, getting feedback, trying again, etc. can really produce some good results.

kimson: For image hosting you can try somewhere free like:

http://www.photobucket.com

If that doesn't suit as it would clearly help the discussion along you can drop me a line and we should be able to sort something out.

Whats the current status of the Asylum's free image hosting? This FAQ may still prove useful:

Where can I get free sig hosting?

I'll send you the picture this time and will make sure I post my attempts onn the board next time.

May i suggest a looksee at this image: http://www.chocolatedesign.co.uk/chocolate-wedding6hearts_tmp.jpg

This should give you a nice indication of how light & shadow play, and how you might create the 3D depth.

Kimson, I hope you are feeling a bit less confused this week

Chocolate text is proving to be a bit more difficult than anticipated at first. Still, it is fun trying out various methods and I see I am not the only one who wanted to take a bite (sorry ) at it. I have not yet got my teeth into it, but I came up with this confection this evening, after eight actually. Arghhh, can't stop, must be turning into a chocaholic.
