I found this interesting, its from 2001 --> Why did you join the Asylum?

Hum,
Not being around back then. I would have to say I found the Asylum while looking at cool background images for my desktop at Ozones.com and I came across the Philosophy and Silliness Section and found the people to be very interesting. Anyway...my little baby is crying...see ya.

I stumbled on the Asylum when seeking nerds to share my passions with.... All I found was a strange building in which somebody had painted the walls orange, the doctors were selling black pills and a mad torturer was hiding in the basement muttering incoherent sentences about "shock therapy"... I still wonder why I liked the place ;-)

I fell asleep in front of the computer whilst trying to figure out what PhotoShop could do. When I awoke I was here! Some nice people showed me to my cell and said they would help me understand the voices in my head. They took notes and a photograph
just after giving me my first Black Pill. I then promised the Doc that I would do the all the Asylum gardening if I was shown just some of the mysteries of PS.
I then locked myself away in my tastefully padded cell with the Doc's Hands On Medicine Book and I've been blissfully happy ever since.
Now the voices in my head are singing and I am never going to leave.

... just kidding actually my story with the Asylum goes farther back than what my 'Insane Since' date says! I joined the Asylum around 2001-02 by the name of darknosis. I was new to Photoshop back then (well not that new had been using the software since 98) and needed some help I believe it was chrome that I was 'in' in those days. Anyways I don't remember who but someone in the Asylum made me feel bad about something... I think it was Suho... maybe or it could be Slime I don't remember so anyways I left the Asylum like a little baby noted that I wasn't of much then nw I'm more mature than then. 'Twirth my return I vowd to hunt down and teach whoever that person was a lesson... if I can only remember that name!!!

The place looked nice and I could smell those black pills. I can't remember what those black pills smelled like at first, but I know it was good at the time, now I don't notice the smell. When I was here my fist day, I submitted my site to the reviews, at that time, I didn't realize how crappy my site really was (syntax wise), now I'm all standard XHTML in just about every project from that time on. But, yeah, I got here from Google.

I was studying for a web programming/admin degree when I first came here, but when it was all said and done I learned more Javascript and PHP here than anywhere else. I love this place, it is one of the reasons I now get paid to play on computers!

Nope, I found the Asylum before seeing any of Doc's sites too. I don't remember what tangent I happened to be on the day I found this place, but I lurked around for awhile before claiming a cell of my own (which has been somewhat abandoned lately). What kept me coming back though were the piles of great code snippets that I kept running across. Besides the resources available here, there always seemed to be someone who could help out when you ran across a problem you could figure out.

Now?

I don't know why I stay. No one here really uses filters. It's all about;

"studying the world about you"
"draw what you see"
"use css"
"standards this and standards that"
"does god really exist"
"does WS really exist"

Dammit I'm tired of the plattitudes! I want the "incredible artistic creativity filter" I know mahqa has one, I suspect tao has one too, Oh and don't even get me started on those new guys with the 3d animation short...

Oh and that warmage guy with the detailed understanding of blend layers and composites?

Damn all you people and your talent!

Oh an what about The Grand Poobah himself? pfft, I'll bet he has 'secret' filters he uses and just made up all the ttorial stuff to throw us off track... Friggin weirdos... pixel by pixel you taunt me with your superior talent... ohh, one day though... one of these days... huh? what was that noise? what happened to my voice... WHAT's HAPPENING!?

For all I know it began with me being totally fascinated by Doc's trekker interface, coming across the forums (without knowing that they were forums, of course, as that concept wasn't known to teenage Germans at that time), having trouble figuring out what all the English words meant and not returning for a year or two. The next time I happened around here has to have been around Xmas '01 when I was trying to get some style sheet things to work in NN4.... then Emps and that coffee boy somehow tricked me into getting into the specifics of CSS, stuff like tableless layouts, and into translating a bunch of GN tutorials for the intenationaglobalization project (which still is a well-kept secret!), even into writing own tutorials, reading millions of entertaining posts and web pages, then putting half a year of life into the grail.... and now here I am, studying for a bachelor of science in information technologies for some strange reason. And though I hardly know him, it might all well be the Doc's fault. Hmmm. Funny place =)

I had seen Doc`s work and was awestruck. I joined because I had stumbled across a trial version of PS 5.5. After some experimentation, I created a website. I came here to get opinions of my outstanding creation. Which the Inmates promptly ripped to shreds.
And rightly so. It sucked. It was frought with overdone rollovers, too many colors, and generally crappy work.
But, the thing that made me stay was the way they ripped it up. They told me all that was Wrong, but several people went to some trouble to help me make it better. Shared their hard earned knowledge freely. That was when I got hooked. This was a new concept to me. I liked it. There was so much humbling talent here...willing to teach ME !! Too cool.

I spent years ripping off Doc's fanct javascript and modifying it to do what I wanted it to do. Never was much for joining forums back then ... so I lurked. Then one day the chance to give back arose, and I couldn't 'coz of the no guest posting rule .. so I got me an id and got stuck.

I'm not around too often any more. The band, the rockets, and the volume of work see to that. But I lurk.
