I haven't been around for a bit, so pardon my redux if this has been mentioned already - but I wanted to comment on the impressive job the "GMaps" guys did.

I like the client-side tricks used to attain the various animation and other visual effects, but I also appreciate the usability things such as preservation of the browser's back button (which in a dynamic client-side app is not a trivial task.)

They also put in lots of useful key shortcuts for navigation (arrow keys, page up/down, home, end etc.)

Some discussion and analysis - words, code.

Very cool stuff - I'm glad to see a large-scale, highly-visible web app doing impressive things with client-side code.

I ran across this the other day and I love the interface they've come up with. I am extremely pleased to see dhtml being employed in a much more mainstream and useful fashion. Way to go Google!!!

I'm loving it too - just waiting for the German / European version!!

Here's some more discussion that I just discovered: Who will stop the Google juggernaut?

OK, there may be similar or even better Java services, but just the fact that and how they're doing this and the superb Gmail interface, the Google Suggest tool and who knows what else in DHTML.... great ideas all around.

I happened across Google Maps the other day and was stunned. It's possibly one of the best applications I've seen of DHTML in recent times... They never disappoint, I must admit.
