I have discovered that the username "brett" is available on this board. If at all possible, I would like my username altered to: "brett"

just sign up a new, and possibly post something to that note in your profile.
Changing a user name in the database is serveral hours of work to catch *all* places.

Or notify in your brett sig that you are formerly known as Nada`King for a while.
