Topic awaiting preservation: Busty blonde seeks assistance! (Page 1 of 1)

Maybe it's because I'm a girl, maybe it's because I'm blonde....maybe a combo of the two lol...but I'm struggling with the very first tutorial I looked at on this site (which rocks by the way!). Liked the look of the pretty glass ball thingy so thought I'd take a shot at it. But then whamo, second page and it's talking about creating circular channel layers...and already I'm WAY lost! I'm not a COMPLETE novice at PS, but due to being self-taught, there's big gaps in my education! So can you guys fill me in? (And by that I mean HELP! ;o) Where it says in the tut, " I'll start with a circular channel, the same shape as the circle on the layers, cool? " ....if you're not cool...how do you do it?

Well, it is a little cryptic, Take a look at the picture, labled "channels", that should help you understand.

Basicly you what to create an additional Channel, that matchs "Mask of selection #4".

A channel with a black background with a white circle, that's in the same positon and size of the black and gray disk layers.

Now there are several to acheive this: The easyest method is to simply save your circular selection when you create it, inoder to make the black and gray disk layers, When Photoshop saves a selection, it is stored as an addtional channel.

If you no longer have a selection, try one of these options:

A: If your black circle is on a transparent background, select that layer and choose load selection, choosing the layers transparancy from load selection dialog. You could also use the short cut, by holding down the control key, or the option on mac while selecting the layer. Once you have a circular selection again, save it as above.

B: If your background isn't transparent then you will have to either use the magic wand to recreate the circular selection or Or use the copy/paste method: Go to the layer that contains the black circle, Use select all and copy it to the clipboard. Then go to the channel palette, create a new channel and choose paste. With newly created channel selected use image--> Ajustments--> Invert.

Thanks for getting back to me! Have got the desired result, so thanks again! Just so I'm clear, does that mean that the 'Mask of selection' isn't actually a mask, like a Layer Mask or Vector Mask is for example, but just called a 'mask' in this tutorial due to it's matching the underlying channels?

Also, chances are I'll run into other problems in this or other tutorials...assuming the FAQ's can't help, should I continue to pepper the Forum with my petty trifles, or is there a more suitable place to stick my issues? (now now.... be nice!)

Well a mask, could mean many things. It depends on the context used.

I can't find when that tutorial was written; But my bet is it predates the existance of layer mask and vector mask.

But basicly a selection is a "mask", that (for a lack of a better term) only exits in memory, (e.g. It hasn't been saved to a layer mask, or channel ect...)\

If selection-->Save is used, the selection info, is trasfered to a channel, which and then be edited and reload as a selection at a later time. The channel is sometime refered to as a channel mask, or a alpha channel.

The inter relationship between, channels, selections, quickmasking, Layer Masks, and Vector Mask is one of the core concepts one grasp to make full use of Photoshop. I suggest reading up on those section in the manual until you better understand them, before moving on to more complex concepts.

Yeah I'm working my way through the books, but I'm more of a learning-by-doing kinda gal! But you've helped for sure, so thanks again! Should I come back here if I have other problems, or am I in the wrong place? Wouldn't be the first time if I was!

Although it might be a good idea t check the FAQ here, the manual or Google first as a lot fo answers have already been answered. The Asylum can help pick up the slack

We do like to help pick up the slack, it gives us fulfillment in many different ways, that tend to vary by individual.

The one thing that I believe most of us agree upon is:

If you are going to ask a question about PS or another imaging program accompany the question with your most recent image, and even a link to something similar to what you are trying to achieve. If you don't post an image of what you have so far you will likely receive a request for said image and maybe even a nasty reply or two.

Also it is polite when you have made changes to post the results. Seeing someone improve is good validation for our effort, and will help to build your cred here.
