Topic awaiting preservation: The box?

I remember a while back you were talking about this box that you were going to send around the world to members of this board. What happened to that project? Did it ever happen?

I read about ti recently, can't find it now, but I think it's discontinued.

Actually, I prodded Wes about it a few weeks ago. He said (roughly) it was still on his to-do list, though far down it, as he's busy with work.

Yeah, the BOX has been on hold I'm ashamed to say. The funds that people had generously donated to the cause were sent to Justice 4 Pat, as they were just sitting in a PayPal account doing nothing. I'm still very interested in starting the BOX -- I've just been hard at work trying to finish a book and to make ends meet.

Actually, since Lacuna brought it up, I've been noticing things while out shopping that I would need to put the BOX together. Depending on what happens for me in the next few weeks (possibly another book) I may try to scrape together some minutes and dollars here and there and slowly put something together.

I think the real stumbling block, though, was the Web site. I was going to do something similar to MAX's OZONE Asylum Locator to track where the BOX ends up, but it had become terribly complicated somehow -- can't remember why at the moment.

I'll try to go over my notes and maybe put together a to-do list.

It's nice that people are still thinking about it, though.

I got it.

Buy a plastic tote at Target.
We can start a thread devoted exclusively to the box, and mail it to whoever you want.
Then they will contact someone else in the Asylum and mail it to them. If that person has already gotten the box, they can just say, "Hey...I've already had the box, pick someone else."

I was actually very much looking forward to The Box... I don't get to the Western Hemisphere frequently, but when I do I tend to travel around a bit. I was hoping to get my hands on The Box during one of these trips.

I'll try to start working on the idea and see how far I can get with it again. With any luck, maybe we'll see The Box take shape sometime before year's end.

Maybe until then we could all contribute to actually building The Box.

An idea:

Draw out and create the essential lengths of wood for the box. Cut the lengths into small puzzle pieces and send them out to anyone interested in contributing. Those interested will then decorate their piece however they like without obstructing the fitting of the pieces. Ship your piece back to the assembler and he will glue it all together and seal it with many coats of polyurethane (or whatever that stuff is they use for coating the floors at roller rinks). We then have a box to work with.

I think that just might be the main roadblock. What will The Box look like and what will it be made of?

Thumper, i must say, that does sound like a very unique idea and personally i would love to see it happen. Would love to hear others peoples ideas on the subject.

If I remember correctly. Wes' original idea for the box was a Pelican Case. I like Thumper's wood box, but I'm worried about how much it will cost to ship (if it needs to be). I'm glad to see this idea resurface.
