Well folks, tomorrow, May 19th, is the big day.
Not only are they doing this with a closed hearing, but they also have not released the proposed expansionist legislation to the public, quite effectively keeping us in the dark.
All we (the people...remember us?) have been told is that they want to expand surveillance powers in "terrorist" as well as criminal investigations. Then again, under section 802 (which does not sunset and is rarely mentioned) everything is considered "terrorist" activities. Administrative subpoenas, an instrument to circumvent judge-signed search warrants, are also on the menu. If anyone has more info, I'm listening.
quote:
From article #1: "It's a power grab. This increases the executive branch's power to secretly search and seize people's medical records, tax records, firearms purchase records and information about the books and magazines they read," said Lisa Graves, senior legislative counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union.
America is lost. National IDs, constantly expanding police-state powers, and at the same time a majority of the population for gun control. *sigh* Are we really that stupid?
On second thought, don't answer that.
If you want to express your outrage, or just want to have a good time, call Intelligence Chariman Kansas Senator Pat Roberts at 202-224-4774 (fax 202-224-3514) or the Senate Intelligence Committee at 202-224-1700. The ranking Democrat member of the Intelligence Committee is West Virginia Senator John Rockefeller, 202-224-6472. FWIW.
