A client I've been doing some work for has volunteered me for the task of finding a source for icons of nations' flags. (Has to do with a Web site and resolving IPs to specific countries.)

After a mostly fruitless search, I dug up the following:

http://www.watiworks.com/shop/
http://setiathome.free.fr/images/flags/iso3166-1.html

The former apparently is used by Apple, though with a square format it was understandably turned down. The latter I thought was pretty good with its table of ISO codes and such, but it was also turned down. I tried again and found http://www.lenon.com/downloads-file-26-details-253_IP-to-Country_Flags.html, but it provides less information than the SETI@home site.

The site my client is working on was one they took over from another company and the way they make it sound, the previous company had some sort of service that provided the icons, which were kept updated. Anyone know of anything like this?

Silly question, perhaps, but have they tried to get that info from the previous company?

Also - why did the turn them down, and what is it exactly that they want?

My usual thick-self...I don't quite understand what you're looking for. That said I have a coreldraw disk containing something close to 800 flags. Maybe more. If this might be of interest... give me a couple of examples of what you're looking for... I'll email them... if they work... I'll bundle up the bunch and send 'em
off.

Well, I guess it would help if I knew what they were looking for. I've asked for details, but haven't received them yet.

The reason they didn't get the info from other the company is because the other company was dropped by the client in favor of this company. So they probably aren't real anxious to help.

I think what they're hoping for, though, is some sort of "service" that will provide a continually updated catalog of ready-to-use flag icons. I dunno.

I'll keep the other suggestions in the queue until I get more info. Gracias!

wikipedia : List of national flags. It shouldn't be hard to build a little extraction script. But I doubt of the legality of such script.

Most of the flags seems to come from the CIA : World FactBook, in which they were originally in Public Domain, but some have seen their colors enhanced or size modified, which may change the licence scheme.

Thanks reisio!
Now that I think about it, one would rather run the script I talked about on wikipedia than on the site of the CIA unless you went to see a van of the telecom company settle in front of your appartment for a while and some men in black come in and flash you.

OK, looks like they've suddenly decided to go with the SETI@home icons.

Thanks for the help!
