for some reason, when i try to view php files on my linux box, they want to download instead of viewing them.

I configured apache for php as the manual said but for some reason it doesn't want to parse the php.

Sorry for the long code below but this is my http.conf file

code:

I had problems with this a while back. I think I ended up having to move the AddType directives out of the IfModule mod_mime.c block and into my vHost block. Try putting these two lines outside of any block and see if that helps:

code:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml
    AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

You'll probably want to add index.php to you DirectoryIndex directive too.

Piper,

thanks for the help. it always seems that when i am having problems with this kind of thing....you show up kind of funny

however, that didn't do the trick. really has me puzzled because i just upgraded slackware. it was working fine before and i just saved my http.conf and changed it after i upgraded so I am not sure what the problem is.

i did notice from the php.net site that they say to add:

AddModule mod_php4.c

but I don't have that file, I have mod_php.conf though. At the end of the file it does say Include /etc/apache/mod_php.conf so I am "guessing" that is doing the same thing.

thanks for the help. i'll keep diggin.

Hmm, that must not have been how I fixed it. I'll look over my httpd.conf on my work box Tuesday and see if I can remember what I had to do to fix it. I'll post back when I figure it out again. Did you upgrade to Apache 2 when you upgraded Slackware by chance?

Might it be worth skipping troubleshooting the config and slap this into .htaccess to force things to work properly?

quote:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .phtml

didn't know you could do that. I'll give it a go. I am guessing that the .htaccess should reside in the same directory as the php page? /var/www/htdocs ?

Emps,

tried that and it didn't work. I put the .htaccess in the /var/www/htdocs directory, that is where i put the php page, and it didn't work.

Kind of silly......just not working. I know PHP is installed. Just not sure why it's not working.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

I checked my httpd.conf at work and I did end up moving those directives into the vHost block for some reason. I just can't exactly remember why. I did find this while googling though:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Running_MediaWiki_on_Slackware_Linux#Configuration_of_Apache

You've already got step one done. The only other steps that would pertain to you are 2 and 4. Give it a go and see what happens.

If that doesn't work I'd start researching the missing AddModule mod_php4.c.
