And there I thought that the Beatles just were a bunch of hippies who only wrote songs like "let it be", "obladi oblada" and "all you need is love".

Maxwell's silver hammer

Not quite worksafe. Don't even bother if you have no sound.

You wanker.

I've always loved this song, though I've always been in the minority as far as that goes.
I can see why it would be disturbing for some people....but...

The animation was great - I'm rather happy he just went straightforward with it.

Very cool =)

Reminds Me of the Boomtown Rats' "I don't like Mondays" It's based on a 16 year old girl who grabbed her dads gun and started shooting her school from the house across the street.

When asked why she said "I don't like Mondays".

mmmm Maxwell's silver hammer, from the album Abbey road where the Beatles had their studio called... Abbey Road
I got that album as a present when it was pretty new, which means that I do have it on vinyl

If you like that song you should listen to the whole album plus the album Sgt Peppers Lonley Hearts Club Band. Perhaps a bit odd in todays perspective but a true milestone from a producing standpoint at the time God did they make a truckload of great songs...

As I understand it, "Maxwell`s Sliver Hammer" is a part of the Ceremony of the Pope dying. They tap him on the forehead 3 times to make sure he's dead before they bury him.
A hold over from the 15th century, when they had a bad run of burying people alive due to lead posioning.

well....a silver hammer is part of that ceremony. It is highly unlikely, however, that 'maxwell's silver hammer' has much at all to do with that...

all the beatles' works are timeless, like any other good sh*t I reckon! This has always been a bit of a "standout" song in their collection for me, I've always seen it literally as well, which just didn't fit with the rest of their catalog, which is a lovely mi(a)crocosm of the statement from mahjqa above. Listen to it all and it's a weird soup.

Now, howsabout that Glenn Miller Band?!?!

Much of the Beatles stuff was great, but they have a pretty sizeable collection of throw-away material as well (1/3rd of their earlier stuff, half the Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine (the album), etcetera). The only (timeless-ish) band I've ever seen create an entire collection of incredible music, with minimal fuck-ups, is Radiohead and Pink Floyd.

Pardon? I cannot find my words, I'm speechless...
We're not talking about a band only, here, but a phenomenon! You might find half of their music is crap, but they have brought to people much more than music, a complete lifestyle that is, and you might want to compare Elvis with them, rather than Radiohead or Pink Floyd, please. I always think of a lonely 15 years old nerd discovering life in his dark bedroom when I listen to both bands.
And sorry about that, both bands make me feel like hanging myself when I listen to them; I'm not saying it's bad (not hanging myself, getting dull feelings), but at least the Beatles brought a bit of hope for their generation, Radiohead bring nothing but the everlasting thought this planet is a huge mountain of shit, with kids dying everywhere but in their mum's arms, kids killing each other, people not able to get the person they want, and such and such. Thanks for cheering me up! I'm not surprised people prefer buying the crazy f***ing frog, at least you have a laugh...

Hmm? No. I personally love the Beatles, however as most artists, they produced some works (and possible like the ones I listed) which are both vastly overrated and/or terrible. I realize the "revolutionary" nature of their work: that doesn't make it all neccesseraly good, just like Joy Division (helped) redefine music, doesn't make their entire catalouge good (most of it isn't...for that matter).

By throw-away, I meant something more along the lines of "trite." Their first few albums (Please Please Me, With the Beatles, A Hard Days Night, With The Beatles) don't show much progression (although there is some) in sound; much of these albums feels (to me) to be, although excellent music, redundant. It's an impressive catalouge of similar-sounding music, and not in the "band-unity" sense.

Of course, this is personal opinion. I think Rubber Soul, the White Album, and Let It Be are their best albums (Revolver in their somewhere). I'd list them up there on my favorite-bands list.

On Yellow Submarine, I think the album is horrible. I'm sorry.

Radiohead is just a personal "all-time" favorite band; Pink Floyd, on the other hand, produced a sizeable catalouge of music which constantly evolved and really evokes far more emotion and shows more music complexity and artistry than most of the Beatles work. Their later stuff, not so much, but it's still good.

But whatever. I'm 17: however not a nerd. You have a point there, though. My playlist consists mostly of experimental/avant-garde electronica, electroclash and dancepunk, post-rock and random indie-rock bands.

That or, why the hell do I feel defensive over a non-attack made by someone I hardly know...That is the real question.

I never said so having this picture sticking in my mind doesn't mean I think people who listen to them are actually nerds... My Dad's seen them live, which I would have loved to do, honestly. I'm not putting Pink Floyd down, I think they're great, but they put me down, sad bastards...

Fair enough, I've never listend to it anyway... Agree about the double white album.
Basically, I just can't help defending them, they've radically changed my life, although I'm only 22. I get agressive with that

By the way, i think there should be a music section in this forum. Then it would be perfect

Hmm, that's better. I found their recent stuff depressing and bland. Division Bell, urgh!

I think Pink Floyd's earlier stuff (when I got around to it in my dad's vinyl collection) was probably the first music I deliberately put time aside to sit down and listen to as a kid/teen. I thought it was a shame that the music I felt most moved by (by all the greats, not just Pink Floyd) was released too early for me to have grown up with it.

What I had to endure was the 80s-90s in my most formative years. That wasn't much fun for me as it was hard to find anything inspiring or exciting in the music of my own time. Amazing what an outcast you feel when you can't relate to the music of your own generation.

The Beatles were okay, I s'pose, but I don't think they were gods or anything. What makes them really stand out is the trend that seemed to begin with their inception, and the hip girl- or boy-band fad continues.

Sometimes, I hate them for that. :P

Cue tabla drums and sitars.

I used to have a lot of Beatles vinyl that just got lost along the way. I think we forget just how good they actually were as innovative musicans. Just been listening to tha above tune and "Come Together" far out
When I call to a friends house (who has most of the recorded songs of the fab four) we go on a little nostalgia trip and listen to a selected few of the albums right through beginning to end. It's fab and the gear I did not see the Beatles play live, but I did go to the Cavern and played on the the same stage that the Beatles played on albeit a decade later. Still had goosebumps though.

Oh yes! The first Pink Floyd album I bought was Wish You Were Here followed by Meddle. I can still remember the drone of Shine On You Crazy Diamond pondering from the speakers. Too bad it skipped me be a good 30 years, too.

[shamemode]

Perhaps I have been harsh, but I was subjected to my younger brother blasting out Cyprus Hill for a good couple of years. Never got that obsessive about music myself, but enjoyed a little of the classics (and classical) on a good pair of earphones. I really didn't hear a lot of the good stuff being played.

[/shamemode]

I have a Creative NOMAD Zen Xtra that (I swear) has saved my sanity on many a crowded commute. I'm glad to note that a lot of the aforementioned artists appear on my oft-shuffled playlists.

Glenn Miller was actually Steve Miller's father, so if you tally up the hits in their combined fantastic catalogs, there is no family that would rival the Millers for music that's written itself into the fabric of Americana.
