Thats 4 since Sunday:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/17/calif.quake.ap/index.html

The one on Sunday is signifcant because (I'm reliably informed) it happened on the Anza Gap and last time that happened (in 2001) the boffins said it was the foreshock for the long overdue large quake. They proved to be wrong and are keeping their mouths shut this time around. If some nasty is on its way then they'll probbaly get criticised for that too.

Also the 5 largest california quakes have happened between 4am and 9am so keep your keys by your bed.

If I was out in that neck of the woods I'd probably take the week off and head up into the hills - just in case. At the least I'd make sure everything was secure and there was plenty of bottled water and canned food in the cupboard.

Whats the word on the ground?

The word on the ground is 'fuck off'... just fuck off ok? =)

Oh... it certainly is of concern alright. I'm sitting here on the west coast of vancouver island...can see the water at roads end...which is about 350 paces...and I doubt I'm much more than 200 feet above sea-level.

Yes... we have a supply of water set in... canned goods , tent, portable radios with backup batteries etc.

WHEN that big sucker does hit the greatest problem will be access/egress. There's only one road with a bridge ...in and out of this little town and the road itself is akin to a broken snake.. so I doubt there'd be any 'outside' help for quite some time.

People are paying a whole lot more attention these days because of the indonesian quake/tsunami. But before that happend the majority of people out here just ignored or perhaps refused to accept as fact that we most certainly will one day.... get hammered and likely harder than indonesia.

In the meantime... 'bottoms up!! and cheery bye" =)

Here in BC the geological record provides evidence of a 9+ Richter about every 500 years.

The Juan De Fuca Fault is LOCKED off the West coast of Vancouver Island and could slip any second now.

This will prove a major catastrophe and we are nowhere near ready for it. Though some efforts have been made recently, they are little more than window dressing.

The lower mainland will suffer most here. Much of Richmond and Delta will pretty much disappear due to liquifaction. That means hospitals, police stations and fire departments will be unable to respond. The airport will be out of commission.

The West Coast of the island will suffer the brunt of the tidal wave as will Washington State and likely Alaska...it could also wreak a bit of Havoc in Japan, Russia etc.

Here on the Island we should fare better, though we will likely lose all bridges across the Gorge. However, we have plenty of emergency services all over the area.

But as we have few tall buildings, so-called 'collateral' damage should be relatively light.

Loss of life? Unknown.

Funny story, this week there was a Tsunami Warning here due to the quake off Calif.

Several people fled to their cars and drive to the local high spot, running red lights all the way.

Such panicked ignorance. The only effect we in the Victoria
area will feel from such an event will be extremely high tides.

In any event, it is on it's way.

Read an article here today in which an expert predicts the effects of a Tsunami here and on the mainland would endanger structures within 30 feet of the high tide line.

ON the west coast, more than 60 feet above the high tide line would be dangerous.
