You could try editing the supported versions number in the extension. Worked for me on a couple of others. Google on "xpi winrar". I think I followed the instructions on Statusbar Clock to fix it (before the new version came out) and applied that to some others, where it worked just as well.

I'll do that brucew. I found some stuff but they were stand alone apps for windows. not much use on my linux box. thanks for the info
