Yup.

I am now 40 years young (although, they say here in Germany that I am now officially an "Alter Sack!"). Sort of amazing, that I reached these years, when I look back.

It's been a hell of a ride!

Welcome to the second half!

I used to be confounded by old people who said things like "The first half is only preparation for the second half" and "True joy and meaning doesn't come until later in life" and "I'd never go back" and "Youth is for kids."

Now, I am one of them. And, if all goes well for you, you will be too.

I wouldn't trade an ache or pain for all the youth in the world if it also meant giving up everything else too. Joy, grace, peace and the occasional peek at wisdom and understanding all more than make up for the physical attributes of youth.

Although I do miss my hair. And I keep misplacing that walker

One of the privledges I claimed for myself on occasion of my 40th, was the right to refer to those half my age or less as kids, as in "Ach! Kids these days!" More often though, I find myself using it as a term of affection or endearment.

I met a remarkable woman a couple of weeks ago, who, by my own measure, can call me a kid. I couldn't help but to think, "Damn, when I grow up I wanna be just like her."

And by that measure, perhaps I should be welcoming you to the third fifth.
