Topic awaiting preservation: limiting internet access to specific URLs? (Page 1 of 1)

I've got a 5 year old boy and I need to restrict him to URLs that I specify.

How can this be done outside of using a proxy service or some kind of filter software?

I was kinda thinking hoping that I could accomplish something through a firefox extension or Windows host file, something like that as I'll be letting him on my desktop at home with limited XP user account. I don't think there's such an extension for FF and don't really know how to go about it with the hosts file route...

forgive me if i sound like an asshat, but wouldn't you (or your wife or other adult), be there supervising his surfing? i mean, no amount of filtering or restricting is going to work better than you.

and to answer your question in a long way, he's always had a laptop that had the pcmcia wireless card stahsed away in my room so he accessed nothing on the network. But now he's into batman dot com! I came home from the office todays and he's sitting at my desktop playing the games there and had been, unsupervised, for 30 minutes says mom. So I've begun thinking about a safe environment for him. I can get by making him a custom home page if I have to and stripping the address and search bars off of firefox. It's not like he can read and type locations or searches anyhow but he's beginning to read so it won't be long...

It's not so much I'm wanting to filter what he sees, well, I do, but more that I want to restrict him from ending up at places with popups. Since he can't read and only clikcs, I think it wise to limit it his user account and try to keep him away from any and all popups. I've seen grownups right bugger a PC from internet clickiness, I'm sure a 5 year old might do some damage, tho he's smarter about it than a lot of adults already.

What I've decided to do for the time being is to limit the XP account so he can't install anything, take the search and address bars off of firefox and build him his own start page withlinks to the sill crap he likes. Speaking of silly crap Petskull, that game is one of the links
