So...
As the heading says, does anyone in here live in Las Vegas?

It turns out that since our company met a pretty important goal last year they are bringing the whole company from Sweden to Las Vegas... All 250 of us...
We won't go all at once naturally, we'll be divided in 3 slots.

My slot is 17'th to 19'th february (friday to sunday), travelling thursday and monday so it's a full long weekend which is pretty fun, I'll actually have my birthday in Vegas, that's a first

So, any tips for someone who cannot afford to gamble? (not really interested in casino games either) I mean, there has to be something else than casinos and bars there... right?

/Dan

Oh there's tons of stuff to do there. Think of it as a theme park for grownups, where the games and the bars are only a very small part of the package. I used to go four times a year for a week at a time and never ran out of things to do.

Almost all my Vegas links are outdated, but you can start with the local newspaper, http://www.reviewjournal.com/ and go through the Arts & Entertainment section and "Neon". I see lots of good shows coming in mid-February.

Most of the entertainment guides have ads on the R-J. You can peruse some of those too.

There are hundreds of sightseeing tours--many to the Grand Canyon. Expect to spend a whole day on a bus tour or a whole morning or afternoon on one of the air packages. Speaking of air, my favorite way to see the valley is falling through the air at Skydive Las Vegas. Or, staying earthbound, you can drive to the Hoover Dam, go hiking in Red Rock Canyon or perhaps take a day and drive up to Area 51.

The weather will be warm by Swedish winter standards, but you won't be using your swimwear or lounging in the sun.

You could just spend the whole weekend walking the strip and downtown gawking. And you still wouldn't see all of that! The Stratosphere Tower is worth the few bucks. Please stop by the men's room first before riding the Big Shot. Insanity and X-Scream are new since I was last there, but it looks like the same advice applies.

There's a rollercoaster at the top of a space needle-like tower, but I think most people just watch shows or gamble.

I always like to get behind the scenes. Like having a look at the hydraulics behind some of those monster rides... or the pumping system for the canals of venice. I think they've also put together a decent graveyard of the old neon signs that used to light up the strip.

It's been eons since I was last there but absolute bang for the buck.... the pawn shops! The items that have been pawned will astound you and if you're looking for musical instruments and know what you're looking for .... you'll find it in one of those pawnshops probably right next to the false teeth, glass eyes and wooden legs. =)

Also, I do not recommend the roller coaster at the top of the Stratosphere ... kinda slow and lame. I do, however, recommend the Big Shot! (Here's a tip, though. If you wear eyewear and have a choice between glasses and contacts, wear your contacts. They'll make you take your glasses off.)

Agreed. It was more lame than a kiddie ride. It seems they've replaced it with two others, Insanity and X-Scream, which seem certain to clear one's bowels. http://www.stratospherehotel.com/las_vegas_stratosphere_ride.html Forgot about them making me take off my glasses on Big Shot. That helped make it even more scary since I couldn't see a thing.

Holy CRAP! I don't know if I could handle those new ones. The Big Shot was the only ride to ever really scare me and those new ones look far more intense.

The X-Scream puts some interesting stresses on the tower... Me, My wife and a friend of mine when up there for the tour and the like... when the X-Scream comes down the whole damn tower bounces and you can see it's impact on the glazing system you look through... There are corner breaking and cracking right under where the drop stresses are for the ride. Beyond the potential for a very long freefall death should something go wrong... it was pretty fun.

If you want to gamble but don't have any money go to every casino sign up as a member and get the free roll of quarters or $10 playing money they give you and always remember to play the free pull games at the entrances. If nothing else you'll get a stack of swipe cards and playing cards to bring home with you.

When I was there we stayed at the MGM Grand... nice from the outside... very nice on the inside, very Super 8 in the room and not worth gambling in. My favorite place was across the street, a little dingy place called the San Remo. Live music, free drinks, dirty carpet and better odds. LOL I had way more fun there then anywhere else I gambled. The Dam tour was a lot of fun too but now they don't let you on the generator floor since 9/11. Disappointing but a small part of the tour. We took the Pink Jeep tour from the hotel... They drive you down there give you information, water, meet and greet like friends feeling and show you around the place before you go on the official tour and info show. Not too expensive and quite a lot of fun.

Do you know where you are staying?
